Big picture

"Challenge Success" at Beckman

As the principal of Beckman High School, I want to let you know about a program that we are participating in beginning next school year. It’s a program designed to maintain the current academic levels we are so proud to have achieved, but address the potential stress, anxiety, and/or competition that often exists at a high-performing high school. “Challenge Success” comes out of The Stanford Graduate School of Education and has been implemented successfully at high schools across the country. Here is a link to additional information about the program that is specific to parents. Also, if you are interested, there is a book that has been published related to the program that is titled “Overworked and Underprepared.” A number of our staff members have committed to reading the book in an effort to better educate themselves on the issues potentially present in our current culture.

Thank you,

Donnie Rafter

Beckman Chemistry Team

Beckman High School recently earned a third place finish at the Chemistry Olympiad with the team of Edward Jin, Sophie Nguyen, Kaeshav Chandrasekar, and Siu Lee. During the first round, Edward scored highest in the region, which was the first time for Beckman. He was then invited back to take the National Olympiad exam in which Edward Jin is now ranked top-20 chemistry students in the nation! Edward is now invited to take part of the US National Chemistry Olympiad Study Camp over the summer where they will train and prepare students to represent the United States in an international competition. About 80 countries participate in this competition that is hosted by a different country each year. This year, it is located in Prague, Czech Republic. Best of luck to Edward Jin!
