ROOM 215

Mrs. White's Team

THIS WEEK:

What a GREAT first week of school! I am enjoying getting to know your children and love watching all of the new friendships blossom! Here is what we worked on:

MATH: We started Unit 1, discussing place value to the millions, rounding, and different ways to write numbers (expanded form, standard form, word form).

READING: We read Lemonade: The Musical. We are working on character traits and ways to describe a character and how that character may change throughout the story.

SPELLING: Students wrote down 4th grade "NO EXCUSE" words in their agendas. Please make sure your child can spell and read each of these words.

WRITING: Students started their first writing project - My Teacher's Secret Life! Your kiddos are so creative! We are practicing starting sentences with capitals and ending punctuation.

We completed our Math MAPS test. Everyone did great! We will discuss these scores at our first Parent/Teacher Conference.

NEXT WEEK:

Students will complete the Reading and Language MAPS test.

MATH: Students will begin working on multi-digit addition and subtraction. We will focus on making new groups when adding (carrying) and borrowing when subtracting. We will also discuss estimation and exact answers. Please see videos below...

READING: We will read the story Mighty Jackie. This is a great story about a female baseball player that struck out Babe Ruth. Ask our children about Mighty Jackie! Students will also work on creating a baseball card of a famous player using character traits they read about that player.

SPELLING: The spelling list is included in the homework packet this week. Have your student practice at home. We will have our first spelling test on Friday.

WRITING: We will start a "tweet" project! Students will write about a fun summer activity. These will be posted in the hallway.

SCIENCE: Students are going to be learning about the scientific method. Students will work in a groups to come up with a question they can investigate through a science experiment. Groups will conduct their experiment on Friday in front of the rest of the class. Students may need supplies from home to complete this. Please see video below for more about the scientific method.
