This week in reading, we will be practicing how to select a just right book and reading a book three different ways (reading the pictures, words, or retelling a story). We will also be practicing how to read fluently using different poems. In writing, the students will be learning grammar (punctuation and capitalization rules), practicing letter writing, and writing complete sentences.


In math, we will be focusing on adding one-digit numbers. Although many of the students will already know how to add one-digit numbers, they need to be able to add and subtract fluently within 20 (know the answer within 5 seconds). We will be practicing strategies to memorize these facts and beginning next week will take math timed tests. If you know that your child struggles with recalling these facts, please practice them at home using flashcards or online math games.

This site has extra problems, tutorials, and games to practice the mathematical skills we are learning in class.


In addition to reading 20 minutes each night, the students will also have a math packet. This will need to be turned in by Friday (your child can turn it in early though). Please only let your child spend 20 minutes on this each night. If he or she struggles with any of the skills, please leave me a note on the paper and don't spend more than the 20 minutes. Spelling homework will begin next week.
