FSCA Chapter Update
July 2014 Edition
What This is All About
Hello! My name is Lindsey Taylor, and I am your FSCA Committee Chairperson for this year. I will send out a monthly newsletter highlighting the activities of local chapters, so please send me pictures and details about anything exciting your chapter is doing! I'll also be including helpful hints about how to increase membership in your chapter and notify you of upcoming events with FSCA. My contact information is at the bottom of the page and I can always Skype, visit or conference call in if you need a representative to speak to your counselors about becoming FSCA members. A big welcome to our new and returning chapter presidents, and looking forward to a fantastic year!
First Lady Michelle Obama
FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States-learned that at conference!) shared some exciting news, that in addition to Teacher of the Year, the White House will now recognize the School Counselor of the Year with a dinner and ceremony. What more incentive could you need to be an amazing school counselor! Click Here to listen to her address for yourself.
American School Counselor Association Conference
This was my first ASCA Conference, and it was beyond incredible. If you missed it, I highly encourage you to attend next year's conference in Phoenix, AZ! Click Here for more info! (Little known fact, at least to me: ASCA plans their conference sites in advance- and I'm talking through the year 2020 people! Upcoming cities for the ASCA Conference include Boston, Los Angeles, Denver, Seattle, and New Orleans.)
Rosalind Wiseman
Author of Queen Bees and Wannabees, the book that inspired the movie Mean Girls. Her newest book studies the power relationships between boys and is called Masterminds and Wingmen. Click Here for a free e-copy of a guide that she and boys she interviewed co-wrote for males dealing with these issues.
Summer is a Time for Planning
Chapter Checklist
Some counselors are off for the summer, or if you are like me, you are a 12 month employee and are continuing to work in the summer. Either way, whether you're in the office or at the beach, you can find some time to start organizing your chapter.
Below is a chapter checklist of things to be thinking about....
1. Email me if you need a New Chapter Application.
2. Make a list of Chapter officers, members, and the status of each person’s FSCA membership. (Be sure to distinguish if you have any student, retired, or affiliate members.)
3. A minimum of 10 chapter members need to be FSCA members, including the President and President-elect.
4. The FSCA Membership fee is $45 annually for professionals, $20 for retired counselors, $15 for student members, and $10 for affiliate members simply interested in counseling.
5. Start brainstorming about your first event of the year. Some chapters have done Principal/Counselor Receptions for their District, membership drive, and had guest speakers or professional development workshops. If you need ideas, just ask, I'm happy to help you brainstorm!

Event Information
50th Annual Florida School Counselor Association Conference
Be sure that you and your chapter members attend FSCA this year. Coming from a three-year FSCA Conference Veteran, trust me when I say that the workshops, keynote speakers, networking opportunities, and memories are worth every penny! (Helpful Hint: Some school districts will even pay for you to attend, and you can usually take TDE leave rather than personal leave for professional development.) Click Here to Register today & Click Here if you are interested in being a presenter. The deadline is July 12th, but late proposals will be accepted on a space-available basis.
