First Grade Fellows
Here are some exciting activities we have done so far!
What's going on in first grade?
This month, our first grade fellows focused on:
- STEM project
- Fractions
- Double Digit Adding & Subtracting with Regrouping
- Close Reading Strategies
- Answering Questions with Evidence
Making Water Filters
As a part of our STEM project, we learned about the different types of precipitation we have. Then, we used different materials to make water filters to help us better understand why having clean water is important.
Making Water Filters
We used a plastic bottle, charcoal, cotton balls, charcoal and sand to make our water filters.
Experiment: Cleaning Dirty Water!
Can dirty water be cleaned?
After making our water filters, we performed an experiment to see if dirty water can be cleaned. The result? A huge success!
Fractions
After learning about parts to a whole (fractions), we made a fraction wheel to study the pattern of the shaded shares.
Fractions
Fractions? A piece of cake! (or pie!)
To celebrate Pi day, we learned about how to slice cherry and apple pies evenly among our fellows in the class. Then, we ate our shares while completing a word search!
Regrouping
Our fellows were introduced on how to add and subtract double digit numbers with regrouping through chanting rhymes and completing sorting activities.
Close Reading - Think Marks
We use think marks to help us better understand during reading.
Close Reading Strategies
We read once, highlight unknown words, re-read, focus on the detail while reading, and use think marks to help us better comprehend what we are reading.
Answering Questions with Evidence
Using the close reading strategies, we answer questions based on the text. We provide evidence by referring back to the text. Using the think marks during reading help us easily answer comprehension questions!
