WM Kindergarten Curriculum Update

Reading and Writing
Reading
We will be starting our Reading Super Powers unit where students read with print strategies and sight word power. Students will learn strategies to take on even the hardest words.
Writing
Up next is the Writing for Readers unit. This is a narrative unit where students write true stories with details to make stories that people will want to read. Students will access checklists to make their writing readable for others.
Math
We will be comparing/ contrasting 2D and 3D shapes; counting by 2s; introducing the concept of writing an equation using +/= sign; comparing and ordering quantities
Science
During Science we will read about and preview the change in season as animals and people. We will discuss hibernation and migration of animals as well as the changes we make to adjust to the new season.
Social Studies
During Social Studies students will learn four steps to help them solve problems with others. In a series of skill builder activities, they learn and practice these four steps; stop and calm down, talk and listen, think of solutions, and agree on a plan to try.

Technology
Students are navigating educational apps on an iPad. They are familiar with Starfall, PBS Kids, Kids Doodle and Educreations.. Students are practicing logging into a computer with their unique username and password.
Art
How do artists use color? How old is art? How can you express feelings through art? How does art teach us about history? (Jim Dine’s Heart Art, Cave Art)

Guidance
We are learning about Empathy this month. We will learn skills to help us identify feelings in ourselves and others, label these emotions, and take the perspective of others.
