Using Formative Assessment to Create Success Criteria & Ownership in Learning
Knight offers the idea to involve students in a dialogue to identify quality work. Give students examples of what you think is highly proficient work and ask them to identify the characteristics of that work. Then provide an example you think is progressing toward proficient and repeat the process with the students in dialogue. Once the high and low end of proficient is determined, the proficient level can be teased out from between.
Knight claims that when students are actively involved in identifying the attributes of high-quality work, they are more likely to demonstrate that quality in their own work. Also, involving the students creates a sense of ownership for the students, which lends itself to self-regulation of their own progress. The final benefit is that initial goal of teachers being able to write proficiency success criteria in student-friendly language.
Please do not think it is necessary to use a formative assessment to help write every proficiency scale aligned rubric. Use Knight's suggestion for when you are struggling with writing the success criteria in student-friendly language. As always, you can employ your instructional coach.
