NEWS FROM THE CORRAL

May 6, 2016

Good Evening Pony Parents,

We are promised beautiful weather this weekend as we celebrate Mother's Day. Remember to schedule time in your busy Saturday to cast you ballot in the GCISD Bond. For information on the bond and polling options visit gcisdbond2016.com

This past weekend GMS sent AVA Machado, Ethan Fortune, and Paula Valencia to Austin with Mr. Hannon to compete in the Texas History Day competition. Texas History Day is part of the National History Competition where students make a history project based upon on theme. Our students were awarded 3rd place for their interpretive website about the Stonewall Riots! We are so proud of Ava, Ethan, and Paula for their accomplishment and thank you to Mr. Hannon for sharing your passion of Texas History with our students.

This week students decorated teacher's classroom doors with the theme, "Where will the road take you?" Our intent was to place additional focus on college destination awareness for all students. In the typical middle school way, we made this a competition and the winners will be announced next week. Enjoy the pictures of student product in the newsletter.

Our teachers wish to thank everyone for all the words of encouragement, snacks, lunches, and extra smiles this week during Teacher Appreciation week. GMS is blessed to have dedicated staff who understand the middle school student mindset and truly enjoy watch them blossom. At GMS Teachers Matter!

Next week is a busy week of STAAR testing. Remember to get you student to bed early, feed them a healthy breakfast, and send them to school in a great mood and on time! If you can pull all this off with a middle school student in May you might be parent of the year! Yes these are challenging years for parents.

As part of the GCISD LEAD 2021 Strategic Plan, GMS students will join the league of 1:1 on our campus. What this means is that every student at GMS will have a device to use daily in their classroom as well as to take home and use as necessary. We will hold our Parent Information meeting on May 19th at 6:00 in the GMS cafeteria. A letter was sent to each family last week outlining our 1:1 plan. This is one more way our district is preparing students for a world beyond the four walls of the classroom!

As always thank you for supporting all things GMS and I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.

Have a blessed week,

Linda Young, Principal

Coaches currently have an open gym scheduled allowing students to continue to work and stay in shape. This past week our athletes were using wrestling techniques to develop strength. Thank you Coach Hill for building our program from the ground up! Hard work will pay off!

Coaches have information about summer camps which are vital in keeping your athlete working out and staying fit over the summer break.

Volleyball League Information:

If your child is interested in playing volleyball next year, they need to be playing as much as possible. The league will provide our 7th and 8th graders (particularly the ones not playing club this spring) an opportunity to get touches on the ball heading into summer and ultimately tryouts next August. There is no limit to the number of teams you can have participate from your school. Flyer is attached for team options.
