ISTEP Round 2 (Continued)
We are still in the midst of testing. I can tell you this though: you would be so proud to see the stamina and perseverance that these young students have been using during this process. I am reasonably certain there are many successful adults out there that would struggle with these tests. If the kiddos continue this throughout the next two testing sessions next week, then we'll be in business. Thank you for seeing that your child is well-prepared and well-rested next week while we wrap this thing up...that is, until the final round of NWEA testing.
There will be no math homework this week, as math classes have been postponed due to the ISTEP testing.
Oooops!!!!!
As I made my sad attempt at tidying the room up after school today, I noticed the stack of midterms that did not make it into your child's folder. Rest assured, those will be going out on Monday. With all of the testing craziness, they simply "got lost in the shuffle." I do so apologize.
Speak Up; Be Safe (S.U.B.S.) Program
Your child is bringing home very important information about an upcoming prevention program for keeping children safe. If, after reviewing the information about this program, you DO NOT want your child to participate, then please send in the bottom of the letter enclosed in today's Friday folder. If we do not receive the form, then we will assume your child has permission to be included in the lessons. Additional information about this program may be found here.
Final Book Project: Timeline
Has your child begun preparing for our final at home book project of the year, the timeline? Procrastination of long-term projects such as these is simply not a good idea. Your child has been instructed to select a book from our school library from the "Who Was...?" series, which--as you would guess--is a biography. After reading the book, (s)he is to create a timeline of important events in the book. The details are as follows:
- Include at least 10 important events from the book.
- Each event should include a title that explains the event and a picture. Pictures may be drawn or printed.
- Your timeline should include dates.
- Include the title of the book and the author on the timeline.
- Neatness counts!
This long term book project addresses the following Indiana Academic standards in language arts and social studies:
- "Identify how a nonfiction text can be structured to put events in chronological order.
- Create simple timelines that identify important events."
Next Week's Share Topic
We’ve been discussing responsibilities. What responsibilities do you have? These might be at home, school, church, clubs, sports, etc. Please remember that, as for all share topics, props must be present in order to receive full credit.
Hatchet STEM Challenges
As you already know, we are creating young engineers! While reading Hatchet, the main character is tasked with engineering a makeshift bow and arrow. We did the same as we answered this essential question: "How can we create a working bow and arrow using the materials provided to fire Q-tips as accurately as possible?" Be sure to check out some of the photos of the S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematical) action below.
- "Identify a simple problem with the design of an object that reflects a need or a want. Include criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
- Construct and compare multiple plausible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
- Construct and perform fair investigations in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved."
Please remember that if you choose not to order your child's spring pictures, then they must be returned by May 7th. Similarly, if you have decided to order, money is also due on that day.
