News from the Office
Please have your child arrive on time for school. Car riders can start lining up early and teachers will dismiss them at 7:30 a.m. Remember, students are tardy to class if they are not in their classrooms by 7:40 a.m.
Please use School Dismissal Manager to report how your child goes home. You can also use it to report absences or late arrivals due to appointments. You can also call the Attendance Line at 317-594-4840 to report an absence.
We know that many of our families have enjoyed the opportunity to eat lunch with their student(s). However, due to safety and space limitations in some of our schools, district administration has made the difficult decision to keep our student lunches closed to all outside guests at this time.

Help us promote good reading habits while raising funds to support our school.
Starting October 31st through November 22nd students can help raise donations for Deer Creek Elementary. One of our goals is to help fill our school's library with new books. Fall Read-a-Thon Deer Creek Elementary Donating is easy!
Students can bring in cash or donations can be given online through cheddar up. https://deer-creek-fall-read-a-thon.cheddarup.com
Our goal is to raise a total of $15,000. If we can get $3,000 by Thursday, November 3rd students earn a pajama day! Check facebook to see if you can guess our mystery readers over the next few weeks. We cannot wait to read with YOU!
BOOK OF THE MONTH CLUB
We Are Water Protectors, written by Carole Lindstrome, illustrated by Michaela Goede
Summary: The Ojibwe narrator has been taught by her Nokomis (grandmother) that water is sacred, “the first medicine”. A prophecy tells of a black snake that will destroy the land, poisoning the water and killing plants and animals. Now it seems as though that prophecy has come true, and the girl wants to fight the black snake and save the water. She’s fighting for the plants and animals that can’t protect themselves and for Mother Earth herself. The last page shows the protest at Standing Rock: “We are water protectors. WE STAND! The black snake is in for the fight of its life.” This book was a Kirkus Award Finalist and was awarded the Caldecott medal in 2020.

Parents,
Greetings! The students have been preparing over the last few weeks for our Deer Creek Elementary Veterans Day music program. We will use these next two weeks to make sure songs are memorized and ready to go for our Veterans! Thursday, all songs for the program will be posted onto my Canvas music page. Students are highly encouraged to practice these songs when possible to ensure a successful performance.
* What should students wear? Students should wear a shirt that is red, white, or blue (or any combination of those colors) or camo. Shirt should not have any writing or pictures on them. Pants and footwear can be whatever student/parent chooses.
* What time is the program? Half the classes will perform at 8:15, the other half of the classes will perform at 9:15. Each show will be about 25-30 minutes in length with 9 songs included in the program. We encourage those that are attending the 8:15 performance, to please exit the building as soon as possible so that we can get ready for our 9:15 show without too much of a traffic/parking hassle. Those that attend the 9:15 show will also need to exit immediately after the show so that we can begin preparations for lunch that starts at 10:15.
* Does your child/children have any family members that are/were in the military? If so, we would like to recognize them during a photo slide show before the program begins. Please send any photo that you are submitting to my school email:
sspiker@hse.k12.in.us
When submitting the photo, please include: students name, veterans name, relationship to student, what branch of the military they served/are serving in.

Hello from the Global Studies room!
We began using our Canvas page to upload our artwork to keep our progress in an easily accessible format. Going forward, we will be using their Canvas page to turn in their work digitally as they do in other Related Arts classes. Please help your student to ensure their iPad is charged each day, and that they have access to the ability to upload assignments to their Canvas pages. The work that the students have turned in has been very creative, ask them to share some of these things with you, I am sure you will enjoy them as much as I have.

We've been having fun and learning lots over the last several weeks in STEM!
Some of our science experiments have included: making scratch & sniff artwork (exploring our five senses); testing ice to see which materials cause it to melt the fastest (exploring how sunlight warms the earth); and having shadow challenges on our whiteboard (exploring the earth’s orbit and rotation).

SEL News: We have wrapped up the 11th week of lessons this week. Here is a summary of the lessons by grade level:
Kindergarten: In this week’s lesson, your child learned that paying attention means watching, listening, and thinking carefully about something. They practiced different ways of showing they’re paying attention.
Try This at Home: Ask your child to show you how they can pay attention, for example, when you are reading a story with them or explaining how to do something.
1st Grade- In this week’s lesson, your child learned that paying attention can look different depending on the situation, for example, listening to the teacher during a lesson, or looking both ways before crossing the street.
Try This at Home: Ask your child to show you how they can pay attention, for example, when you are reading a story with them, explaining a task, or crossing the street.
2nd Grade- In this week’s lesson, your child reviewed part of the brain, then identified strategies or “tools” to reset the brain and body in moments of big feelings and get back to the Green Zone
Try This at Home: Ask your child to share one strategy they have tried to help get back to the Green Zone.
3rd Grade- In this week’s lesson, your child learned that every time they practice a new skill, the brain gets better at sending the messages for that skill.
Try This at Home: Ask your child to explain what happens in their brain when they practice.
4th Grade- In this week’s lesson, your child learned about stress and ways to manage stress or intense emotions by creating a coping skills toolbox.
Try This at Home: Ask your child to share with you what they have in their coping skills toolbox. (Ex. Practicing mindfulness, taking deep breaths, focus strategies, and positive self-talk).
Have a Great weekend!
