Principal's Post
Dear Davis Ducks,
It is my pleasure to welcome our students, staff, and family members to the 2022-23 school year! I hope you had a wonderful summer and that you are looking at the upcoming school year with excitement and optimism. I am thrilled about our plan for the school year and the opportunity to continue the excellent work of supporting our students academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally.
As I enter my ninth year as the Principal at Davis Magnet School, I can’t help but be full of pride and gratitude. The multiple state and national recognitions received over time is the direct result of our staff and families working together to support the continued growth of our students. I am confident that our partnership and dedicated spirit will continue.
As a parent, I understand the trust you ensure in us to take care of your child(ren). We don’t take that relationship for granted and appreciate the continued support and collaboration between our parent community and staff. Thank you!
Clear, consistent, and timely communication is important to me. I will do my best to keep our community informed and connected through various platforms. Periodic call-outs and/or emails may be sent out throughout the weeks. Social media is another way to stay informed and to celebrate all things “Davis!” If you don’t already follow us on social media, I encourage you to do so:
The Flores Flyer serves as one of my platforms. The format will be similar each month with a few small changes. This “Back-To-School” edition might be a little longer than future issues. Thank you for your attention to detail as you read through the information.
I can’t wait to connect with you and your children upon your return to school. I look forward to hearing about your summer adventures. Our family thoroughly enjoyed the time together and took advantage of the time to travel across our beautiful state. Now, I’m ready to get back to work and support each of our students as they THINK, FEEL, and THRIVE.
Thank you, again, for your trust, support, and continued collaboration.
Go Ducks!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Flores
Principal

Think, Feel, Thrive
In years past we have adopted schoolwide themes focusing on the following big ideas:
Developing our Growth Mindset
Demonstrating Empathy
Building Resilience
Sharing Joy
This year our theme focuses on three big ideas, THINK, FEEL, and THRIVE. All K-6 teachers will be trained in a concept called Thinking Maps. Thinking Maps is a tool that any student may use, at any grade level and in any content area, to further develop their critical thinking skills. Additionally, we will build upon the work we have already done in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) using our district-adopted SEL curriculum, RULER. The third big idea is supporting each of our students to THRIVE in reaching their full potential academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally.
Parent Book Clubs and Coffee Chats will return this year. The two books that we will base our work around include Permission to Feel by Dr. Marc Brackett and Thrivers
by Dr. Michelle Borba. More information with an outline of dates will be shared in September.
Events, Procedures, and Schedules
Wednesday, August 17: Kinder Playdate
All incoming kindergarten students and family members are welcome to the Davis Kinder Playdate on Wednesday, August 17 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at TeWinkle Park. This is a wonderful opportunity for kindergarten students to meet one another, in addition to providing the opportunity for our newest parents to connect with one another, along with our PTA and Foundation Board Members. Schedules allow for the teachers and administration to stop by, but this is more of an opportunity for students and parents to connect before the school year begins.
Friday, August 19: Meet and Greet
Our annual Meet and Greet event is back! All students and family members are welcome to meet their teacher in person on Friday, August 19 between 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. Teacher assignments will be viewable through the Aeries Parent Portal the morning of Friday, August 19. The Meet and Greet is an event intended for students and families to meet their teachers, see the location of their assigned line, and to connect with other Davis families before the first day of school. Access inside the classrooms will not be available during this event, but after meeting your teacher, you may walk to find the location of your room. Thank you for your cooperation and we look forward to welcoming you back to campus.
Monday, August 22: First Day of School!!!
We are so excited to officially welcome all of our students and families to Davis to kick off the 2022-23 school year with an Opening Day Flag Deck. Parents and family members are invited to stay for the event. Your cooperation in following our flag deck procedures makes the event safe, positive, and productive for everyone.
We have about 600 students who will arrive on the first day with their excited family members. Please plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time, especially on the first day of school.
Carefully read through the procedures for Arrival and Dismissal prior to the first day of school. All morning and afternoon procedures are outlined, which includes flag deck mornings too. Thank you for demonstrating patience, kindness, and understanding with these procedures.

The Davis Magnet School Five Core Values
At Davis Magnet School, we have Five Core Values while also expecting our students to demonstrate integrity, leadership, and responsibility. Every day students will be provided opportunities to learn and model these values. As adults, we frequently have conversations about modeling, teaching, and supporting the Core Values. Consistent and clear communication is important. Every classroom contains a Behavior Matrix that is regularly referenced. Set your child up for success by reviewing the matrix and brainstorm what these expectations look like and sound like on our campus.
