The Mustang Minute
May 18, 2018 - Issue 34
Playing all 60 Minutes
With only a little over a month to go (hard to believe I know) we have many activities and events happening both during and after school. All of these activities require respectful and responsible behavior by all of our students. An expectation that we have had (and that students have met) all year. However, I find a gentle reminder from parents and teachers at this time of year can reduce negative behaviors and make this time of year fun, safe, and engaging. I ask that parents have a discussion with their students about "playing all four quarters" of the school year. The analogy worked a lot better last year after the Patriot's Superbowl win but I think I can tie it to our amazing Boston Celtics this year!
Playing all four quarters means that we still have learning to do during this final month of school. Learning in the classroom (major subjects have finals mid-June) and during each of the extension activities coming up.
- Next week, grade 7 heads to the Museum of Science for programming designed by our science teachers in conjunction with the MoS. A great opportunity to take classroom learning and add some fun and adventure!
- The following week grade 8 goes to DC. A culminating middle school trip where students will see their government at work first hand and engage in many civics based activities.
- For the grade 8 students staying back, the teachers have planned a week of fun and engaging activities across all the subjects with some "virtual" trips to the DC area.
- In June, grade six will explore the Aquarium, learning about sea life and again making connections between the classroom and the world around them.
All of these activities require responsibly behavior by students because they also require trust by the staff for students to be able to self-manage. I always remind students that when they leave the building they are not only representing themselves but their school, their family, and their community. A fact that we take very seriously here at CMS and in the Norwood Community.
I thank you in advance for checking in with your students and being the strong supportive partners I have witnessed all year! Strong partnerships between home and school make for successful students and a bright future!
Have a great weekend!

As we near the end of the year we have a few special activities and requests for 6th and 7th grade parents.
Game Night this Friday, May 18, 6:30-9 p.m. - We are excited to offer a Game Night this Friday for 6th and 7th graders. We had a great time when the 8th grade held theirs and it should be really fun this time around too. It's $5 and a drop-off event. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
Car Wash, Saturday June 2 - If the weather is nice this could be our biggest fundraiser of the year. Student Council is helping sign up student volunteers but we also need parents to help chaperone this event. Shifts are organized by grade and you can sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0a48abaf23a20-coakley
Field Day, June 19 & Graduation. June 21 - 7th grade parents traditionally help out with 8th grade graduation, and this year we will need parents to help set up and serve food from 5-7. For field day we need donations of water and ice. Small water bottles are preferred. You can sign up for either need here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0d4aada828a6f85-field1
School kits available for purchase. Order on schooltoolbox.com. Ordering deadline is June 24 and they will be delivered to Coakley the week of August 13th. THIS IS A NEW VENDOR
And for 8th grade parents - we are putting together a slide show for the end of the year. Please feel free to upload photos, share with your kids and let them add in photos from their years at the CMS. https://photos.app.goo.gl/cjgI48M1cjg8kgeo2
We are also still looking for volunteers for PTO next year - board positions and coordinators. Please contact coakleypto@gmail if you would like to help.
