Washington Weekly Update 10/13/23
Weekly Update from Mrs. Jaramillo π
October 13, 2023
Dear Washington Wildcats,
Tomorrow is the Big Day! I hope to see you at Wam Jam! All guests should be aware that Wam Jam is an outdoor event that should be fun and safe for all our guests! Please help remind students to follow the Wildcat Way at Wam Jam and to remain outside and only go inside the bathrooms. The rest of the building and classrooms are closed. Make sure to have your Disco gear ready, and we will see you there from 2:00pm-6:00pm. I'd like to thank all of the countless hours of volunteer work our PTA and Dad's Club members have put to make this event possible! Thank you to everyone who has signed up to volunteer before, during, and after Wam Jam. We are so grateful for your support!
This week we have been very short on lunch time volunteers and we would greatly appreciate your help coming to volunteer at lunch if you have been approved to volunteer after going through the fingerprinting process. We are ever grateful to our wonderful parent volunteers for making each day special at Washington! We especially need TK/K lunch area volunteers, if you are able to, please sign up.
We will soon have our Parent/Teacher conferences begin. If you have yet to sign up for a conference, please check in with the teacher so that you may attend one. It is so important for families and teachers to meet to set goals at the beginning of the year and to build a foundation of teamwork to support our students.
Conferences for grades 4-5 begin on October 19th so on 10/19-10/20, they will dismiss at 1:30pm.
All students will have a 1:30 dismissal the week of 10/23-10/27 due to conferences.
I have heard from families that arrive to school on bikes that during drop off and pick up, many cars are double parking and blocking the bike lanes around school, forcing bicyclists into dangerous situations. Please always be aware of the parking and loading zone rules in the area and work with us to make sure our pedestrians and bicyclists are seen and protected. It is important to note that the white loading zone has been coded by the city as a loading zone during school hours and cars left unattended in the loading zone during school hours may be ticketed.

Safety Protocols
On Thursday, 10/19 at 10:30am, we will participate in the Great California Shake Out Earthquake Drill. Please read more about this drill and how to be safe during earthquakes down below:
Why is it important to do a Drop, Cover, and Hold On drill? To react quickly you must practice often. You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake, before strong shaking knocks you down--or drops something on you. Practicing helps you be ready to respond.
If you are inside a building, move no more than a few steps, then Drop, Cover and Hold On:
DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!),
Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and
HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops.
Stay indoors till the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit. In most buildings you are safer if you stay where you are until the shaking stops.
If you are outdoors when the shaking starts, you should find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines, then Drop, Cover and Hold On. Stay there until the shaking stops.
If you are driving, pull over to a clear location, stop and stay there with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops. Once the shaking stops, proceed with caution and avoid bridges or ramps that might have been damaged.
Ground shaking during an earthquake is seldom the cause of injury. Most earthquake-related injuries and deaths are caused by collapsing walls and roofs, flying glass and falling objects. It is extremely important for a person to move as little as possible to reach the place of safety he or she has identified because most injuries occur when people try to move more than a short distance during the shaking.
Look around you now, before an earthquake. Identify safe places such as under a sturdy piece of furniture or against an interior wall in your home, office or school so that when the shaking starts you can respond quickly. An immediate response to move to the safe place can save lives. And that safe place should be within a few steps to avoid injury from flying debris.
Here is more information regarding emergency protocols we follow from the San Mateo County Office.

Burlingame Intermediate School is enchanted to present their fall play, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, based on the beloved classic by C.S. Lewis. The adventure begins when four siblings inadvertently wander from an old wardrobe into the magical kingdom of Narnia, held in the power of the White Witch, whose evil spell has frozen the land for hundreds of years. The children are embraced by the talking animals who resist the Witchβs evil and await the return of the great lion, Aslan, who is their rightful ruler. This story of love, faith, courage and giving, with its triumph of good over evil, is a true celebration of life.
