Bipolar Disorder
Definition of Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mental illness with severe mood swings, from extreme highs to very low moods. Also known as manic depression, it can bring cause changes in sleep, energy, thinking, and behavior.
People who have bipolar disorder can have periods in which they feel extremely happy with energetic to times of feeling hopeless, sad and with little energy.

High Periods
- excessive happiness, hopefulness, and excitement
- sudden changes from being joyful to being irritable, angry, and hostile
- restlessness
- rapid speech and poor concentration
- increased energy and less need for sleep
- unusually high sex drive
- making grand and unrealistic plans
- showing poor judgment
- drug and alcohol abuse
- becoming more impulsive
- less need for sleep
- less of an appetite
- larger sense of self-confidence and well- being
- being easily distracted
Depressive periods:
- sadness
- loss of energy
- feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
- not enjoying things they once liked
- trouble concentrating
- forgetfulness
- talking slowly
- less of a sex drive
- inability to feel pleasure
- uncontrollable crying
- trouble making decisions
- irritability
- needing more sleep
- insomnia
- appetite changes that make you lose or gain weight
- thoughts of death or suicide
- attempting suicide

Signs and Symptoms
Depression
Depression Defined:
Depression is a serious mental health problem causing chronic sadness and loss of interest in life activities. A person's thinking, emotions, behavior, functioning and physical health are affected by depression. There is a range of severity among patients. Everyone does not experience the changes listed below, but will experience many.
Emotional Changes:
- Feelings of sadness, may include crying for no reason
- frustration or feelings of anger, even over small matters
- feeling hopeless or empty
- irritable or annoyed mood
- loss of interest, or conflict with, family and friends
- low self-esteem
- feelings of worthlessness or guilt
- fixation on past failures or exaggerated self-blame or self-criticism
- extreme sensitivity to rejection or failure, and the need for excessive reassurance.
- trouble thinking, concentration, making decisions and remembering things.
- ongoing sense that life and the future are grim and bleak
- frequent thoughts of death, dying or suicide
Behavioral changes
- tiredness and loss of energy
- insomnia or sleeping to much
- changes in appetite - decreased appetite and weight loss, or increased cravings for food and weight gain
- use of alcohol or drugs
- agitation or restlessness - for example, pacing, hand-wringing or an inability to sit still
- slowed thinking, speaking or body movements
- Frequent complaints of unexplained body aches and headaches, which may include frequent visits to the school nurse
- social isolation
- poor school performance or frequent absences from school
- less attention to personal hygiene or appearance
- angry outbursts, disruptive or risky behavior, or other acting-out behavior
- self-harm- for example, cutting, burning, or excessive piercing or tattooing
- making a suicide plan or a suicide attempt.

Definition
How does Section 504 work to serve students?
Section 504 disabilities generally are served in regular education programs with accommodations.
- A committee of teachers, administration, and parents meet to form a plan to outline the students specific needs.
- Accommodations (see examples below) are decided to ensure the student is receiving the most effective assistance they need.
- The committee meets annually to review and update the plan
Examples of Accommodations and/or Modifications
- Shortened assignment
- preferential seating
- small group testing
- oral testing
- class notes
- etc.
IDEA - Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
Students under IDEA are served in the special education classroom. The IDEA process is more involved than the 504 process and includes:
- Step 1: Determine Eligibility
- Step 2: IEP (individualized education program) is developed by a committee of parents, teachers, administrators and special ed personel
- Step 3:Follow up meetings and/or annual review (AR meeting)
