Effective Formative Assessment
We learned from Lead4Ward last year that a teacher should formatively assess students every 10 - 12 minutes during the lesson cycle. I am always looking for new formative assessment tools to share with you.
Check out the article, below from Brilliant or Insane - Education on the Edge (www.brilliant-insane.com) to find a new formative assessment strategy or two and see how others are changing what they do. Who would not want to read something from a site entitled Brilliant or Insane?
Science-Technology Collaboration - Labdisc Experiment
Do you have an idea for a project/lesson that involves technology? If you need help, email Allison. She is terrific and wants to assist you with student learning.
Student-Centered Instruction
Allison Glen sent these pics to me and wrote, "The students really enjoyed comparing sound levels between a tuning fork, cowbell, and a whistle. Students then synced their data to a laptop which converted their findings into a bar graph." How cool is that! Kids love anything to do with technology!
Small-Groups
Fifth graders will tune-the teacher out after about 10-11 minutes (Remember, one minute for each year of their age is the rule.), but they really love conversation and listening to one another.
Capturing Kids' Hearts Visit
Ron Fox, Process Champions Presenter, Comes to JMQ Tuesday
Last month ten individuals from JMQ attended two days of Process Champions training from presenter Ron Fox to ensure we are continuing to keep the Capturing Kids' Hearts principles and practices alive in all classrooms at JMQ. Ron will be on our campus most of the day on Tuesday. He and I will be doing walk-throughs. What kind of evidence of CKH will we see? Those I see in most classrooms are: shaking hands and other professional behaviors modeled for and practiced by students, a social contract in the room, "catching the germs" in the morning, the "four questions," discussion of "good things," evidence of written affirmations and more. If you need a quick review, you might check the case study link below. I also found a link that explains the Process Champions role.
Process Champions will meet with Ron in the Conference Room from 3:15 to about 4:00 on Tuesday.
