October News

What's going on?

Reading: We are working on learning our genres and working on our silent reading stamina. Students should be able to read for at least 30 minutes without interruption. We are also learning to pick just right books.

Plus AR is getting started the last week of September.

Book recommendations start in October. Ask your child what they are reading and which book they are planning on recommending to their peers.

Math: We are starting regrouping. This is a difficult subject, but it is broken down into chunks to make it easier for students to understand.

Writing: We are learning what it takes to write good narratives. Students have learned leads. We still have endings, figurative language, showing not telling, adjectives and more...

Science: We are working on STEM science challenges. Students will be building a boat, an airplane, and trying to save an egg from a terrifying fall.

Social Studies: Students are learning about communities. They will be working to create their own communities.

Students are also learning about what it takes to be a leader. My classroom is implementing The Leader in Me program. We talk a lot about what leaders do and look for good leadership behavior. Our leadership board will start in October. Every other week students will be nominated for the six leadership habits. Ask your child about what they are.
