From the Counselor's Office...
September 18th at 7:00PM in the Auditorium at LHS, Mrs. Rhonda Hunt, will be leading an information session on Naviance, SMCPS college and career platform. All students who are planning to attend college after graduation, should come to this session. At this session you will learn how to link your Naviance account with Common Application, and let us know which schools you are applying to. Counselors and teachers will be using Naviance to upload transcripts, letters or recommendations, and our school profile. Come join us to learn more!
Seniors applying to colleges: Please know that the counselors will begin uploading and sending requests this coming week. If a letter of recommendation is needed for your college applications, please obtain a Request for Letter of Recommendation form from the Guidance Office. There will also be a new process for sending transcript requests that will require our seniors to submit the request through Naviance. Students who are applying to a COMMON APPLICATION college or university, must link their Common Application with their Naviance account. The Guidance Office will be sharing more information on this throughout the month of September. We will also hold sessions to understand these changes during one lunch in September and October.
Senior Class visits! The counselors will be going into senior english classes the last week in September. We will once again review the process of using Naviance for transcripts and letters of recommendation. We will also be handing out senior letters. These letters include all the requirements your son or daughter will need to complete this year to graduate in May.
Schedule Changes are complete! There will be no more student initiated schedule change requests. Should your student be struggling in a class, please have them talk first to the teacher, and then to the counselor to see if you can assist with setting up a tutoring plan. Every teacher offers tutoring at least once a week during one lunch!

Literacy
Questions to Ask Your Student about What They’re Reading: I like these questions because they cannot be answered with a simple “yes” or “no” and encourage conversation. If you want to get your children talking about the books or texts they are reading, try asking:
For books they have chosen: What drew you to this book? What makes you think it might be interesting?
Does this book remind you of anything you’ve read or watched before?
Will you catch me up on the story? What’s happened so far?
If they made the book into a movie, who would you cast in it?
Have you learned anything new or interesting from it?

I am more than just the Police Officer in your building! I am a resource, someone to talk to, a problem solver, a fact finder,
and much more! Don't be afraid to reach out to me!
FUN FACT: Only around 1/3 of a police officer’s time is spent actually enforcing criminal law; most of the work of a police officer involves peacekeeping, order maintenance, and problem solving
