I Make a Difference Award
This week's recipient of the I Make a Difference award is Nanette Marcia-Garner. Last week's winner, Wendy Barcroft writes, "I did not have to go far to find a recipient, as Nanette is a member of our PLC for biology. Every time we meet, Nanette offers ideas and practical lessons to the group. She is so willing to share her expertise with others, and she is a vital member of the PLC. I have been the recipient of so many activities that she contributes. In addition, she is a great person to bounce ideas around with, and she is a team player when it comes to developing new lessons. Nanette is also the sponsor for the APICS club--the “Asian Pacific Islander Culture Society.” Nanette is not only the sponsor, but she is a role model for students, and she is someone they can relate to. Year after year, she leads one of the largest clubs at Landstown, helping young people celebrate different cultures. The annual APICS show is usually a sold-out event that is not only important for Landstown, but for our community, as well. Most of the proceeds go to support charity. (I might mention that putting on the show is no small feat, either). Nanette Marcia-Garner, you make a difference. Thank you for going the extra mile for Landstown!
Make-up Federal Card Training (Impact Aid)
If you did not attend federal card training last week on the staff day, the make-up session will be held on Tuesday October 22nd at 2:20 pm in the Schola. This session is for staff members who did not attend the training on 10/14/19, but any staff members with additional questions about the Impact Aid program or process are welcome to attend.
IEP & 504 Accommodations
We will continue to distribute 504 and IEP accommodations for new students and students with schedule changes throughout the year. If you do not receive accommodations for a students who is new to you, please let Beth Pickett or Dria Chambers know. Once you receive the accommodations, please take a moment to sign for them in the binders in the main office. The binders have been relocated to the drawer below their former location. Please see Julia or Christina if you are unsure. Thank you!
Professional Learning Opportunity for Teachers with English Language Learners
Do you teach any English Language Learners (ELL/ESL) students this year? VBCPS is offering a session called "On the Road to Literacy for Secondary Newcomers" that is meant to help with teachers with strategies to assist in building literacy and vocabulary with these students. The session is from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 22nd at Plaza Annex. Sign-up in Frontline today!
Invitation from Old Donation School
ODS is showing the film Angst, a documentary, on November 6, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. The film is less than one hour in duration. They have extended the invitation to us and the members of our school community. Information on the film can be found at the following link: https://angstmovie.com/
The showing at ODS is free of charge and the film is appropriate for children and parents. If you have students who struggle with anxiety, this is an excellent opportunity to help them, their parents, and school staff understand anxiety disorders. Preregistration is NOT required.

Food Sampling
On October 22, chefs from the division's culinary team will be at LHS making sausage, egg and cheese kolaches and will be sampling them out during lunch time to the students. This is a new scratch product that the division wants to try in our high schools and LHS has been chosen to test this item. The kolache has been named the "Eagles Nest." Hopefully the students will like it and it will be a new entrée we can start serving. If you are interested, please come down to the cafeteria during lunch and have a sample!

Holiday Help
One of our partners-in-education (Bridge Church) would like to assist students and staff at LHS during the upcoming holiday season. They would like to assist a limited number of staff members who may be experiencing difficulties by purchasing a gift or two for their children. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please reach out to Ms. Chambers to submit your child's wish list to our contact at Bridge Church. Once Bridge Church confirms that they have purchased a gift from your child's wish list, you will be notified to pick up the gift from Bridge Church (3168 Indian River Road, Virginia Beach) on Saturday December 14th.
