We need your help to raise $5,000 to support the Montera Mini-Grant Program. This program enables our teachers to get funding and purchase books and supplies for special projects. For example, last year our 6th-grade team purchased copies of March by John Lewis for each student, while the music department bought ukuleles for Music Exploration class. Let's do this!!!

Montera Turkey Trot! - Volunteers needed

We are organizing a Turkey Trot to be held during lunchtime on November 18th. The Trot will be about about 1 mile, and students will run -- for prizes -- rain or shine.

Parent Engagement Night - virtual event

When: Thursday, November 18, 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Please join us for our second parent engagement event. Our counselors will lead a discussion about social-emotional learning in middle school and answer your questions.

Winter Showcase is coming soon!

When: Thursday, December 2, and Friday, December 3 at 4:30 PM

Sign-up genius for backstage help, set-up and clean-up, concession stand, and donations for pizza and water here.

Our Winter Showcase will take place on December 2nd (choir and strings) and 3rd (band and after school jazz) at 4:30pm. This is a required event and part of your child's grade. Food will be provided to performers for free and will be available for sale for the school community. Dress is all black. Please reach out if you need support with preparing that clothing for your child. I am attaching a flyer with more details. When: Friday, November 26th vs. Portland

Students will get to participate in a pregame shootaround and can stay after the game to come on the court for a post-game free throw!

Montera Shopping Fundraiser!

A Great Good Place for Books (6120 LaSalle Avenue) will donate a portion of the proceeds back to Montera when you shop there on Saturday, December 4th. Just mention Montera when making your purchase.

Pub Crawl!

Are you ready for some fun for a good cause? It's time for an annual Montera fundraising tradition: the pub crawl! Logistics have not been worked out yet, but we have picked a date: December 4th. Please save that date and be ready to party hard for a good cause!

Montera Relief Fund is Back to Help Toro Families in Need

Last year the pandemic prompted the Montera community to create the Montera Relief Fund to help Toro families in need. Last year we were able to raise almost $20,000 for groceries, small cash grants distributed confidentially by administrators to families, and a holiday gift drive.

Once again, we have families of students who have been hit hard by COVID and need your help. Trusted Montera staff find out what the families need and personally deliver it. The Coordination of Services Team confidentially handles requests from families.

Hip Hop Dance Class - Sign Up Now!

Montera Afterschool Program is pleased to offer a three-session Hip Hop Dance Class with Destiny Arts Center. Classes will be Tuesday, November 30th, Dec 7th, and Dec 14th from 3:45-5:15. This will be a trial program and based on student interest we will consider adding this to our Winter/Spring classes.

  • This class is limited to 25 students and will take place in the MUR
  • There is no fee if you are enrolled in our after-school program. Otherwise, the fee is $30 for all three classes.

Go biking riding with Oakland Devo Middle School Mountain Biking Club. Sign-ups for the 2022 season are open. Join a pre-season fun ride 11/20 and 12/4. Sign up here.

Scholarships Available
Trek NICA Pathfinder Scholarships provide students of color with the bikes, gear, and resources needed to overcome historical barriers to mountain biking. Recipients are given a Trek Marlin mountain bike, helmet, gear, and a stipend to cover NICA league membership and entry fees for a full season of racing. For more info email

COVID Testing Information

A friendly reminder to stay on top of Covid testing as the holidays and yet another potential surge descends upon us.

COVID TESTING: Covid testing is available at multiple OUSD sites throughout Oakland. Find locations and times here.

TESTING PRE-REGISTRATION: Before attending an OUSD Covid testing site for the first time, you must register here. This is a one time only registration and can be done at any time. Families are encouraged to pre-register so they are ready to go should they need to get tested.

Supplies Request

Little emergencies always come up, and Montera could use your help in keeping the supply closet full. Below is a list of items most in need. Please bring items to Nurse Elizabeth Hurt at the front office.

First Aid

  • Latex free band-aids (NOT with antibiotic medication in it) in assorted sizes. EVERY teacher needs at least one box and the front office and nurse's office also need a supply.
  • Tweezers for splinters (not the plastic ones)
  • Ice packs for PE and front office
  • Vomit bucket for front office and pick up waiting area

Feminine supplies

  • Cleansing wipes
  • Assorted pads
  • Tampons
  • Assorted sizes back-up underwear (S/M/L/full-figured)

Support Montera All Year Round

There is no shortage of ways that you can support Montera throughout the year -- and we appreciate all of them. Below are a few examples, but to learn more about volunteering, raising money while you shop, making teachers' wish lists come true, financial donations, and so much more, click here.

If your student is feeling ill

If your student is feeling ill with new symptoms such as: a fever of over 100F (37.8C) or higher, cough, severe headache, sore throat, loss of taste or smell (children may say that food "tastes bad" or "tastes funny"), difficulty breathing, vomiting or diarrhea – student should STAY HOME and notify the office. You can call the main office at (510) 879-3211.

Returning to school:

  • Get medically cleared (doctor's note or negative PCR test, AND symptoms have improved and student is fever-free for 24 hours - OR -
  • 10 days have passed since onset of symptoms and student is no longer feeling ill

If your student tests positive for Covid-19

  • Plan on staying home at least 10 days
  • Notify the school of the results
  • Work with the Contact Tracing Team

COVID Information from the District

You can find a comprehensive FAQ from OUSD here. The district is following county and state guidance. Below are a few key points for what happens when someone at a school site tests positive for COVID-19:

  • OUSD is required to report every single positive case to the ACPHD.
  • A response team conducts contact tracing for each positive case and notifies families of students with prolonged close contact.
  • If you are not notified, then your student was not determined to have prolonged close contact with the person who tested positive, so there is not a need to get tested unless your student develops symptoms.
  • Vaccinated students do not need to quarantine as long as they are asymptomatic.
  • Unvaccinated students who are asymptomatic can do a modified quarantine, continuing to attend school but testing twice a week for two weeks following exposure and not participating in any extracurricular activities.
  • Exposed unvaccinated students may choose to stay home for 10 days with an excused absence. If so, they should contact their teachers for assignments during that time.
