January Newsletter

Mrs. Kizee & Ms. Mark

Happy New Year!

It was great to get back to school and start off our new year with the kiddies! We hope everyone had a great holiday and enjoyed the extra time with family and friends!

Just a few reminders:

-The club sign up forms went home this week if you are interested in signing up for an after school club we encourage you to do it right away, as spots fill up fast!

- 1/15 Spirit Day! Wear your Waterford colors!

-School Closed for MLK day 1/18/15

Fact fluency is so important! As we start to wrap up this topic we are working on adding two or more numbers with regrouping. We encourage students to keep using ST Math from home or any form of math game as practice for math facts! We will be testing topic 8 next week. A study guide will come home for that in the next few days.

Up Next is Subtracting Two digit and three digit numbers with regrouping.

Science: Dino's & Google Classroom!

We have started our Dinosaur Unit and the kids absolutely love learning all about them! We are currently working on the Activity list portion that will replace a regular test assessment for this unit. If you are interested in finding out about the cool things on their activity list ask them to show you their Dinosaur Unit in Google Classroom by accessing their drive from the computer! There are interactive fossil dig sites, research projects, creative writing projects and more! Check it out. Although it is not required many students have been accessing their Google Drive from home and working on their projects. This is great because they are so excited about the research and activities that they are self-motivated to work on their projects! They have consistently improved with their computer skills and they are doing so great with the technology! We will also be setting up a simulated fossil dig in our classroom using a baby pool, sand, and clay. They will get to pretend they are paleontologist on a fossil dig!

Reading Benchmark Time!

It's time for us to level our students again. As we close out the current cycle of guided reading we will start pulling students one on one to do reading assessments. We are anticipating growth, as our students have made so many strides in reading and comprehension! After the benchmarks are complete we will send out some individual information in reference to reading levels and areas of strength and weakness.

Writing Benchmark Coming Up!

As we close out the "How to" writing we will be reviewing this week for our benchmark.

We will then move into the genre of Opinion writing.

We have also been doing mini lessons that focus on grammar and sentence structure.

Word Study

Our word study groups are doing great! We continue to move through the sorts and to the next pattern based on the level each student is on.

Remember students work with their word study words and sight words daily during word work.

We will be preparing to do a survey of the second grade sight words on the master list. We will send this home so you can also see what words your child has mastered or still needs to practice.
