Everything you need to know :

A Plaintiff is a person or party filing a lawsuit.
The Defendant is an individual or group being used or charged with a crime.
Summons: a notice directing someone to appear in court to answer a complaint or a charge.
You should get a complaint (a formal notice that a lawsuit is being brought) in the mail.
The complaint and the answer combined in a civil case is called pleadings.
A pretrial conference- a meeting where the lawyers in a lawsuit meet with the judge assigned to hear the trial in order to iron out any trial preparation issues that may still exist in order to avoid having them crop up at the time of trial and cause a delay in the trial date.
Meditation is a situation when a third party helps the plaintiff and defendant reach an agreement.
arbitration- situation in which a third party listens to the plaintiff and defendant, reviews that case and makes a final decision that is binding for both parties.

preponderance of the evidence- the greater weight of the evidence required in a civil (non-criminal) lawsuit for the trier of fact (jury or judge without a jury) to decide in favor of one side or the other.

the decision in a case made by the judge or jury is a verdict.

if the losing party believes something went wrong in the case, they can ask for a review from a higher court.
