Hawk Happenings- 8/27/21 V.5

Hawks Fly As One

We have made it through the first full week of in-person school. It has been so delightful to see smiling faces or crinkled smiling eyes behind masks in the morning hearing their cheerful voices! Students and staff seem to be finding their groove of school and I LOVE seeing the hands-on learning taking place in the classrooms.

Bus Issues

The district is continuing to struggle with the busing issue and we are well aware of the impact it is having on your students and their education. The first priority is getting students to and from school, with the shuttles between schools and to the university campus for North Star College a secondary priority. Unfortunately, this has had a significant impact on students transitioning between buildings during the school day, to which there is no easy solution. If an adjustment needs to be made to a student's schedule so that they do not need to leave campus please work with the counseling office this week.

What If I received a notification of a positive case in the school?

This week many families received a notification that a student in one of their child's classrooms tested positive for Covid-19. This notification will go out to the families of all students in the same classroom of the positive student(s), but it does NOT mean your student is considered a close contact. Our administrative office and nurse are personally contacting all families of students who are considered close contact and working through the next steps with them before we send out the basic notification. If your student is considered a close contact to a positive case we will contact you personally and work through the process following Alaska Department of Health and Social Services Guidelines.

We'll have a regular week of school next week and then the following Monday is the Labor Day Holiday, no school Monday, September 6th.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Student Spotlight- Elias Vargas

Congratulations Elias Vargas as this week's featured Student Spotlight

Elias Vargas is a well-known Hutchison senior with a friendly smile, helpful heart, and passion for assisting others. He began his Hutchison career in the IT cluster, taking as many courses as he could. Information technology is one of his biggest passions. As a senior he is now immersed in both the photography and auto cluster and will be graduating this spring near the top of his class having earned the UA Scholar and Alaska Performance Scholarships, among many others. He's shared that along his high school journey he's made some wonderful friends, had incredible experiences and laughed so hard he has cried.

When Elias applied to Hutchison, the last year of the application process, he was fearful he would not be accepted due to his academic and attention struggles. He shared that when he got notified of his acceptance he cried happy tears and made it a goal to succeed. Elias encourages all students to focus on forming their connections and enjoying the experiences Hutch has to offer because if you do the academics come easy. When asked if he had a favorite staff member he said they ALL are because of the connections.

This past summer he spent a month in Israel where he was immersed in the culture and has decided that his dream is to travel the world taking photos, experiencing different cultures, and just being there helping out. These actions carry through daily in the halls of Hutchison as Elias served as an Ignition Mentor to new students and he has assisted several students in setting up their personal devices to the BYOD network. Currently, he plans to attend a post-secondary institution but is not sure where, it could be UAF it could be Georgetown Medical's precursor school for Medical Technologies as he got a special invite. Regardless, Elias's goal is to do better every day no matter the circumstance.

Congratulations Elias Vargas!
