Nelson Middle School News
May 2016
From the Principal's Desk
Dear Mustang Nation:
Wow! It is hard to believe that the school year ends this week, but that time has come. I want you to know that this school year has been a lot of fun, mixed with a lot of work. Our students and teachers have excelled in virtually everything that they have attempted. We have had very large numbers on our Honor Rolls all year. We have also had a wide array of teams and clubs that had extremely successful seasons and years. It truly has been a good year at NMS.
Our year comes to a close on the heels of an undefeated soccer season. In addition, several students were recognized for making District Band and Chorus this year. The Band, Chorus, FFA, and FCCLA all had wonderful end of year performances and banquets. I hope you were fortunate enough to attend one (or all) of them.
I would like to take a moment to recognize four teachers who were nominated this year for the Teacher of the Year program for Nelson County Public Schools. Tammy McCray, Beth Price, Mary Haines Johnson, and Laurie Oliver were all recognized by their peers as top teachers at NMS. In the end, Mrs. Beth Price was voted as the Teacher of the Year for Nelson Middle School. We could not be prouder of Mrs. Price for her dedication to her students and for her leadership at Nelson Middle School.
In closing, I would like to say thank you to all of the Nelson Middle School community for making this a very successful year for our students. We do all work together as a team for the benefit of our students, and we appreciate everyone’s help in doing so. Have a wonderful summer, and we’ll see everyone August 4th for Back to School night. Please call if ever you have a question.
Sincerely,
Roger D. Dunnick, Ed.D.

rdunnick@nelson.k12.va.usTHE ARTS ROCK AT NELSON MIDDLE- A BIG THANK YOU
Dear Art Community,
I want to say a personal thanks to all the students who came through the Art Education department this year.
'You all ROCK'. Many of you put a lot of creativity and effort into the art pieces, both 2-D and 3-D works. I personally enjoyed exhibiting your creations here at the Middle School and in the community. It was encouraging to watch you grow as artists in the time I had you in class. I appreciated your thoughtful questions and your ideas for your work.
Many of you contributed to brightening other people's day by having your art work at the local hospital. Visitors there and at the Library commented on the fabulous works. Many of your teachers appreciated the creative side of you exploding from the walls of this school as well.
Thank you Art Club for the fun and interesting art, the mission field trip, and the hand-painted art stools we sold at auction, so students could zipline and horseback ride in Costa Rica.
To my eighth graders, thanks for a wonderful year and the willingness to allow me to push the envelope with you. Many of you worked diligently on your work; especially the pointillism, Selfies and carving. You are ready for High School Art. Special Kudos goes to the following eighth graders for their amazing perseverance and respect: Caleb, Cameron, Fanny, Kate, Victoria, Jenisa, Dynesty, Ellie, Tristin, and Kylie.
Thank you Dr. Dunnick for supporting the Arts here at the middle school by allowing me to exhibit in the foyer and getting a 3-D case. You have been encouraging and open to my ideas as a new teacher here, and I appreciate your positive feedback about my content area. The students really notice it when you comment on their art work, so thanks for that.
Thank you, School Board members, for allowing students to go to Costa Rica through World Strides and for supporting the Arts at our March presentation. The Art Club appreciated you allowing us to paint stools for a fundraiser.
Thanks staff and faculty here at NMS for your positive feedback and encouraging words toward the Art Department. I look forward to collaborating with some of you next year.
Thank you Eric for your patience with the ever changing art studio and all that you do for us on the Electives hall.
Can't wait until next year- "BIG PLANS"
Sincerely ,
Mrs. Davis- Art Teacher
