Roberts Middle School
Grit: Volume 30
Dear Roberts,
Did you know that hospitals rate surgeons on their mortality rates? Yes, this is how they keep track of who’s the best. How would you pick your heart surgeon? I want to challenge your thinking. Is this a good system? Does this tell you the whole story of your doctor? In order to not taint their reputations, sometimes the best doctors pass on the most difficult cases. What this means is that many surgeons might be truly amazing but may have a low rating because they take on extreme cases. When you take on extreme cases, your rating reflects your willingness to save a life no matter what the outcome.
Now let me ask you, “How would you rate a teacher?” Remember, teachers never have the opportunity to hand pick their students. We take on the most difficult cases regardless of the current circumstances of any student. We provide the tools that are necessary for any student to be successful. Our stories as teachers are more than ratings and scores. Yes, I said it… What makes our school different is that we never give up on any student despite how they came to us. If a student made progress based on data, we create moments that will make an impact in his/her journey to graduation. If we focus on progress and growth, we make a ripple effect. Thank you for loving kids more than they deserve. 6th grade teachers, continue to use small group instruction as the vehicle for learning.
5th grade teachers, it is game time! Bring it on!
