The Pershing Elementary Newsletter

Principal Message

Good Evening Pershing Families,

Thank you so much for your ongoing support and communication! For the first time since we transitioned to Distance Learning last March, we are down to less than 10 student packets waiting to be picked-up from last week! That is the fastest everyone has managed to come and get materials! Even though we must continue to stay apart, it was so good to see so many students who were able to come pick-up materials in person last week. For those who missed the photo opportunity with PTO, we are working on another date for make-up photos very soon (tentatively on Wednesday, February 3rd, during the next Student Materials Pick-Up).

Social-Emotional Supports for Students:

In addition to the already stressful situation of being isolated from peers and having to navigate challenging technology, some students may also be stressed and anxious due to the current events happening in our nation. Also, we have some families going through extra stress and trauma due to job loss and challenges, financial worries, family members with illness, and some even facing a death in the family. As a school and district, we are here to offer supports for your child and family.

This article from National Geographic provides tips and guidance to think about in regards to our children's awareness and questions they may have about current traumatic events:

If you and your child have experienced death in the family, this is a trusted resource that may help you as you navigate the grieving process:

If you feel that your child may need more support, such as counseling, please reach out to your child's teacher, or me, or visit:

iReady Assessments

Beginning this week through the first week of February 12th, students will be assigned and asked by their teacher to complete the iReady Reading and Math Diagnostic Assessments. Teachers use these assessments to determine student's instructional growth and current need. Teachers have asked me to emphasize to parents to please not help your child on the questions on these assessments. When parents help on the questions, it invalidates the results.

What can I do to help?

To help prepare your child for the i-Ready Diagnostic, encourage them to:

  • Get a good night’s sleep and eat a full breakfast the day of the assessment.

  • Try their best on each question and try not to rush.

  • Work for 20 minutes and take a break.

  • Take your time

  • Try not to worry about questions they do not know—remind them that it is expected they will get only about half of the questions correct.

  • Use paper and pencil to show work for math questions.

If you have questions about the iReady Diagnostic, please reach out to your child's teacher.

If you have other questions, please call us at 916-979-8076 or email me at
