Nationwide TikTok Challenge & Rumor

December 16, 2021

Dear Berkeley County Schools Families:

I want to let you know that we are aware of the most recent challenge that has been shared this week on the social media platform TikTok. The post, which appears to be part of a national trend and did not originate in our school district, refers to a threat to school safety “for every school in the USA, even elementary,” on December 17.

While we do not believe the threat to be credible, we closely monitor the situation and take it seriously. The West Virginia Fusion Center (WVFC) reports that there are no known threats or derogatory findings regarding this event in the state of West Virginia. We have heard reports from other districts that the same post is circulating in their schools and community.

As with all threats to health and safety, we have communicated with local law enforcement regarding the post. You may see an increased police presence throughout our school community on Friday as an added precaution. Our school administrative teams have also been alerted to their safety protocols.

This situation serves as an excellent example of why it is important to avoid sharing posts online that refer to school safety threats. Even if they are not credible threats, they can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for our students, families, and staff. We ask our families to monitor their children’s social media activity and speak with them about appropriate social media behavior.

If you or your child become aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else, please notify a school staff member, trusted adult, or law enforcement agency. As always, when you see something, say something.

Thank you for your partnership as we work to ensure a safe, secure, and positive learning environment for our students.

Stay safe. Be well

Big picture
