Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! I hope all of you enjoyed time spent with your family and friends.
I must take this opportunity to congratulate all of our students who performed in our Winter Concert. They all did a fantastic job. Thank you, Mrs. Stewart, Ms. Maniscalco and Mrs. Strzelecka, for all that you do! Thank you to all the parents for staying for the entire performance, it is appreciated by our students. I would also like to thank everyone who was helpful in keeping the children calm during our fire alarm evacuation. The concert was a great success and I look forward to the spring concert in May.
We have our annual Student Appreciation Day set for January 20th, which all of our students are looking forward to! I hope you can come in to help us that day. As always, I look forward to seeing you throughout the month of January.
Sincerely,
Hillary Bromberg Ed.D.

PTA Happenings
Dear Parents and Students,
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing winter break. Long Island Cradle of Aviation Museum visited RCK in December for an iRobot program. Each class participated in a 30 minutes session in the new Makerspace.
The PTA also hosted our annual holiday shopping boutique. Thank you to all of our parent volunteers who assisted the students in selecting gifts. Square1Art orders have been sent home with students. Thank you to everyone who supported programs and activities through this fundraiser.
Special holiday visitors stopped by RCK right before the winter break to spread some holiday cheer and pass out special gifts from the PTA!
We’re looking forward to several fun and exciting cultural arts programs in the New Year. We are also looking for parents to assist with the upcoming book fair, PARP week and our first Sweetheart Dance. Please come out to our January meeting to hear about the various ways you can be involved in what’s going on at RCK!
Here’s what’s happening:
January:
- January 10th, 9:45am, PTA Meeting
- January 20th, Student Appreciation Day

This Land Is Your Land
This land is your land, this land is my land
From the California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me
As I went walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway
Saw below me the golden valley
This land was made for you and me
This land is your land, this land is my land
From the California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me
Box Tops for Education!
The Box Tops for Education program has been very successful. Through the Box Tops for Education program, an everyday trip to the grocery store can make a difference for the students at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary. This program allows families to clip the Box Tops coupons, found on hundreds of common grocery items, and send them into school where they will be combined with coupons from other families. Each coupon is worth 10 cents for your school. The dollars add up quickly! The average family purchases more than 100 Box Tops products each year, and 100 Box Tops totals $10 in earnings for our school. Ruth C. Kinney Elementary can earn up to $20,000 per year with your help.
We look forward to another successful year for Ruth C. Kinney and your children! Thank you in advance for your participation.
Our Makerspace in Action
What is Makerspace?
Makerspace is a unique area in our school that allows for creativity and innovation to occur. Students have the freedom to design, engineer, fabricate, create, build and collaborate. We are starting small, but thinking big! Makerspace is part of the Maker Movement and it incorporates STEAM initiatives – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.

Character Education Virtue of the Month - Acceptance
The school wide book of the month to illustrate our focus on Acceptance will be the story, Odd Boy Out: Young Albert Einstein, by Don Brown. This book is is about Albert Einstein's childhood and how he was particularly heavyset and odd. He was not like most of the other children his age. However most of his wild ideas as a child helped shape the world we live in today.
Student Showcase
The students in Mrs. Cardillo's class recently learned about figurative language. The students learned about similes and metaphors. They learned how each word or groups of words are exaggerated to change meaning. Focusing on the time of year and the cold weather, the students brainstormed winter words. Using these words and knowledge of figurative language, snow globes were created by each student.
