HAPPY NEW YEAR!
It is my honor to partner with you in your child's education. I realize you are entrusting us with your most precious treasure. Please know that we treasure our students as well. Parents often ask me what they can do to help their child be successful at school, so I'd like to share a few suggestions at this time.
1. Set an early bedtime and stick to it every single night. Sleep is vital to a child's development and ability to focus in school. Kindergarten through fourth grade students should be asleep sometime between 8:00-9:00 p.m. without a TV or technology in their room.
2. Reduce screen time and increase reading time. Children benefit from shutting off technology and TV's. Have your child spend time reading or read to them every night. This boosts their reading skills and helps calm them for sleep.
3. Communicate with your child's teacher. Please read their newsletters/emails. They send important information to keep you informed of current and upcoming events in the classroom and school. If something is happening at home that could impact your child's ability to concentrate at school please let the teacher know. This helps us support your child while they are here.
4. Participate in school activities when you are able. This helps your child see that you value their school and learning. This also gives you the opportunity to get to know the school staff and other parents at Siple.
5. Check their backpacks/folders every night. You can learn a lot about your child's day from looking in their backpack. What are you looking for? Check their folder for homework or communication from their teacher. If they packed a lunch, check to see if they ate it. If not it allows you to ask them why not. Sometimes at the beginning of the year they are so excited to visit with friends that they don't eat and then run out of time. Take this as an opportunity to remind them that they need to focus on eating while they enjoy visiting with friends. Once you have checked their backpack get it ready for the next day by helping them pack their snack, folder, etc. This ensures they have everything they need ready to go and eliminates the morning stress caused when something is missing and the bus is coming.
6. If they bring work to complete at home help them by giving them time to complete it. If they do not understand something help them if you are able. If you try and cannot help them, write a note on the incomplete work asking the teacher to review it with your child. Our students do not have a lot of homework. Work that is sent home is often work that was not completed in class during the time allowed by the teacher. If your child is bringing home a lot of homework contact your student's teacher to ask about it.
We are here to help your child grow academically and socially. We will work hard to help every child reach their highest academic potential. We will also work hard to teach kindness, acceptance, responsibility, and friendship. Your support and partnership this year makes all the difference in the world. Please contact me if I can be of any assistance this year. Together we make an awesome team!

COUNSELORS CORNER
Happy New School Year! My name is Julie Simonsen and this is my third year as Siple’s Elementary School Counselor. My office hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00-4:00.
School counseling is a short-term, solution-focused counseling in which the goal is always to get students back into the classroom. My role is to support students academically by helping meet their social and emotional needs. Students are able to request to see the counselor by filling out a “Rock Referral” page and parents are always welcome to call (810-591-5104) or email (jsimonsen@davisonschools.org) with requests.
In addition to having individual sessions and guidance lessons, in October we will continue our 6-week Sunshine Group for changing families and our Grief & Loss Group. We will also be starting our S.U.P.E.R. Kids Group for encouraging positive emotions and relationships in the November.
