Principal Ponderings: The Story We Tell Ourselves
I was reminded of this same premise tonight as I was reading Whittaker's bedtime story, the literary classic, Knighty Knight Dragons. See, the story that the dragons were telling themselves was that there was a monster in their cave and they resorted to sleeping at various locations in the village. Knight Nella went on a mission to slay this monster, but she only found a rodent-like creature called a floppy-eared fleagle whose shadow made it look large and the cave acoustics made it sound threatening. The story the dragons told themselves was a myth, yet, it altered their decision making and put them in a less than favorable position.
If you fear you are telling yourself a story about something, either meet it head on or get another's perspective. In the end, the story you are telling yourself could just a be work of great fiction, quite like Knighty Knight Dragons.
