Parkview Elementary
October 2018 Newsletter
Dear Parkview Families,
Dear Parkview Families,
Fall is in the air! The mornings have that crisp cool feeling, and the leaves have started to change colors! The students and staff have been hard at work on establishing those trusting relationships and setting the tone for rigorous academic standards. We are in full swing of the 2018-2019 school year.
During the month of September, our staff focused on teaching expected behaviors for all areas of the school. We have found that using common language and expectations for all students really help with keeping our school climate positive and reduces the number of behavior incidences so that academic time can be maximized. The entire school is using the book The Energy Bus for Kids, by Jon Gordon as a platform to talk about perseverance and resilience! The book highlights ways to stay positive and to overcome challenges that may come our way. I was able to read the book in all 24 classrooms! It was a great starting point for our school year. As a part of the Energy Bus theme this year, our students have the opportunity to earn Bus Tickets for great behavior. Research tells us that positive reinforcement is one of the best ways to not only change poor behavior, but also to maintain appropriate behaviors. When you have a chance, ask your child if they have received a Bus Ticket yet and why they received one.
Academically speaking we have been hard at work assessing students to meet them where they are at in terms of student achievement. This year we will continue with our enrichment/intervention time called PRIDE Time. This is an opportunity for students to receive targeted instruction for approximately 30-40 minutes a day focusing on their greatest need in the area of literacy or math. A team of teachers including our classroom, PRIDE time teachers (Title 1) and other resource teachers and assistants work with small groups of students identified needing specific skills or strategies. We track growth by using pretests and posttests or progress monitoring. It has been found that when the students are tuned into their specific academic needs and can track their progress, they make big leaps in achievement!
October is a very busy month at school; I must stress the importance of setting good bedtime routines and having regular attendance. Our district's mission is committed to excellence and empowering and challenging students to learn while preparing them for an ever-changing global society. Establishing and following those bedtime routines and having regular attendance at school will help to achieve that goal! Thank you for your commitment to your child’s academic progress and success. We are in this together.
Yours in Parkview PRIDE,
Melissa Olson
Principal

PBIS News
October is here and we're off to a great start! The entire school worked really hard in September by practicing safe, respectful, responsible and kind choices throughout the school. Principal Olson read the book, “The Energy Bus for Kids” to each classroom. We all Hopped on the Energy Bus at our first all-school assembly on Friday, September 21st. Congratulations, Parkview! At the assembly, we sang our "Parkview Pride" song and learned a new song called, “The Energy Bus”. Thanks to Mrs. Lea’s class and Miss Coddington for the fabulous ‘Remix’. What a great way to kick off the school year!

News from the Nurse
Nursing and Health Services will be collaborating with the Jim Falls and Lake Wissota Lions Clubs to provide vision screening for all elementary students in October. The Lions Club uses a photoscreening digital device called a SPOT camera. It is a hand-held device that helps detect vision issues quickly and easily. If your student has a reading that is considered out the recommended area, a vision referral letter will be sent home with your student. The schedule for screening at Parkview is October 9th & 10th.
