CvMS Media Center Highlights
December 2013
ALL IS COME, ALL IS BRIGHT: NEW SELF CHECK-IN STATION
During December, the media coordinators introduced 40 Language Arts classes to CvMS media center's new self check-in station. Students learned how to locate the correct barcode on the back of their books, scan them, read the screen for additional information, and shelve the books in either the fiction or nonfiction section on a specific cart. Students seem excited about this new procedure and are doing a great job! We believe allowing students to check-in their own materials will foster responsibility, help them to learn more about the Destiny catalog, and also help them differentiate between nonfiction and fiction books (student below is checking in his own book at our new self check-in station). This process allows the media coordinators to use their time to aid students and staff in locating materials. It also gets the books on the shelves in a more timely manner.

Visions of Books Danc'd In Their Heads
These students are excited to check-in their own materials now at CvMS. This brand new procedure was implemented during December, and students are doing a great job. This picture shows the circulation cart with bright orange signs-this is where students place their books after checking them in at the station.
Joy to the World...They Met Their Goal
Battle of the Books team members had a winter celebration to mark their achievement in reading seven books by December 15. All students met their goal, and many exceeded the goal by reading more than required! Mrs. Whitaker and Mrs. Cravens read to students the famous short story, "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry and made the ornaments seen in the picture. Inside the ornaments are actual fragments of the short story. Students enjoyed the story, and they seemed to love their gifts.

Snowflakes...No 2 Are Alike
CvMS student media helpers are fabulous! They are seen here helping decorate the media center for the month of December. They do a wonderful job every day during AP. Some of their duties include shelving books, straightening shelves, decorating, assisting the media coordinators with tasks, running errands, and more. These students were recommended by their Language Arts teachers to be media helpers. We are thankful for them!
Unwrap a Good Book
The student seen here is excited because she found presents in the media center. Say what? It's true-the media coordinators thought it would be fun if they wrapped new books for students to check out. Students did not know the names of the books and only knew the main subjects, themes, ideas about the book. This seemed to encourage reading amongst many students. We also had a library display with books about Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Hannukah amongst others. Reading is always a gift!
Chillaxin With eBooks
Mrs. Cravens and Mrs. Whitaker created one cool bulletin board to encourage students and staff to read eBooks. CvMS Follett Shelf eBooks are available for download to personal devices or they can be read on school/home computers. CvMS is a technology savvy school. Mrs. Whitaker and Mrs. Cravens participated in a teleconference and had a personal meeting with Follett Shelf eBook and Destiny representatives to learn about these great programs and features. Students and staff will learn more about Follett Shelf eBooks, WebPath Express, and One Search in January 2014.
