FEBRUARY VIRTUE: Respect

This month we will celebrate the virtue of respect.

God has given us the virtues of friends and companions to keep us company and to help us out along the way.

Every person in our lives carries the Spirit of God – and so every person is our brother or sister through Jesus Christ.

As brothers and sisters who share one Holy Spirit, we are all valuable to God. We all deserve to be shown courtesy, consideration, sensitivity and thoughtfulness, which are different ways of saying respect.

That respect should come first and foremost from ourselves. We have to respect ourselves and then we will be able to respect others. We should also be able to expect to be treated with respect by everyone we meet – our brothers and sisters in Jesus.

Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at respecting ourselves as well as respecting those around us.

A respectful person…

  • Treats himself/herself and everyone else with equal consideration and courtesy

  • Uses a positive tone of voice and body language

  • Avoids swearing, name-calling, put-downs, and inappropriate gestures

  • Says ‘Excuse me’, ‘Please’, ‘Pardon me’

  • Avoids gossip

A Prayer

A Prayer For Love of Others

Precious Lord Jesus, Wonderful Holy Spirit, Awesome God, help me not to be selfish.

When I am alone, give me a heart to think not about myself, but about others.

When I am with others, give me a heart that forgets about myself and reaches out to them.

When I am in pain, push the pain aside so I may be consumed by the needs and hurts of others.

Inspire me to be a beacon of your love to my friends, family, and co-workers.

Give me a heart to make friends regardless of who they are.

When I meet others who are very different from me, give me a heart to see these people as they are where they are.

Help me to trust others even when I might be hurt by them.

Help me to never hold a grudge or be resentful because of what others have done.

Remind me every day to do what Jesus did in healing and loving others.

Help me be a healing force by pushing my wants and aside.

Help me to sacrifice myself for others as you sacrificed yourself for us.

All these things I humbly pray in the name of the most Blessed Lord Jesus Christ, the Mighty God, and the Ever-present Holy Spirit upon whom we can rely.

Amen

February is Black History Month

Every year, Canadians are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities and events that honour the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present.

We take this time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation we are today. During Black History Month, Canadians can gain insight into the experiences of black Canadians and the vital role this community has played throughout our shared history. (Source: Citizenship and Immigration Canada)

Holy Cross continues the yearly tradition of celebrating Black History Month in February. A number of events will take place to promote, celebrate and honour Black History:

  • Our school library will display a host of books related to Black History as well as a bulletin board dedicated to the topic.

  • African Culture and Experience Presentations (Dates to sent home to individual classes)

  • Black History Month Spirit Week events as listed

New Mascot and Logo Selection

Thank you again to all those who took the time to vote. By an overwhelming response the name that was selected was the Arrows!

As part of the celebration on Friday January 24 Mississauga Ward Five Councilor Carolyn Parrish assisted in the official unveiling to the school. It was an inspirational assembly honouring the past, present and future of Holy Cross.

The name Arrow has great significance to the Malton Community. It is actually the name of the Canadian Prototype Jet that was designed, built and tested within blocks of Holy Cross. The Arrow jet in its time was the culminating height of Canadian ingenuity and engineering. With such historical significance to the Malton community and its connection to engineering, design and Industry, we believe it is an excellent reflection of the values and virtues of Holy Cross

SAFE SCHOOLS FOCUS FOR FEBRUARY

Telling an Adult about Bullying is Not Tattling

This month’s focus is the difference between tattling and telling. In dealing with bullying situations, students are encouraged to use the strategy, ‘telling an adult’. Although this sounds simple and logical, there are many difficulties and roadblocks associated with this strategy. Younger children struggle to understand the difference between telling and tattling, while older children struggle with their desire to deal with situations independently. The goal of telling an adult is to keep children safe. Students will learn to identify the difference between telling and tattling (reporting and ratting), explore reasons students don’t report bullying and understand how to effectively and safely report to an adult.

Tattling/ratting is defined as telling in order to get someone into trouble, or telling when there is no one being hurt and no rule being broken that could result in a dangerous situation.

Telling is defined as reporting unsafe behaviours to an adult in order to get help for someone – to get someone out of trouble.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

- use incidences where one child is telling you about sibling behaviour to help children identify whether they are tattling or telling

- practice with your child how to ‘tell an adult’ about

bullying (what happened, how they feel, what help they desire)

- develop awareness of the ‘reasons’ children state for not reporting bullying to adults

Holy Cross Eco Team Update

Winter Walk to School Day is Wednesday February 5th.

Come join us on Wednesday Feb. 5th as our school takes part in Winter Walk day, a celebration of the unique joys of walking to school in the chilly, snowy days of winter. Walking to school in winter has many potential benefits, including benefits for your child's health and well-being (like opportunities to learn and socialize on the way to school, and arriving to school alert and ready to learn), our community (reduced traffic congestion around the school) and the ENVIRONMENT too! Students are encouraged to wear yellow!

National Sweater Day is Thursday Feb. 6th. We are encouraging all students to wear their favourite sweater. Our planet is getting hotter, we want Holy Cross to turn down the heat on National sweater Day.

Important Parent Reminders

PARENTS IN THE SCHOOL YARD

Please note that supervision in the playground begins at 8:15 am, but FDK yard continues to have supervision beginning at 8:15 am. Please do not drop your children off where they are unattended in the school grounds before teacher supervision begins.

We are also requesting that PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS please respect the school grounds and stay on the perimeter of the yard. Avoid waiting for the bell with your son or daughter. It allows for greater visibility of the premises. This also allows teachers on duty to ensure that the children are safe. Please under no circumstances try to address a behavior concern with a student or parent/guardian of that student. All issues and concerns should be brought to the attention to the classroom teacher or the office.

INDOOR SHOES

Please ensure that your child has a pair of indoor shoes. The weather gets cold and wet with the snow and students should have a pair of indoor shoes in order to keep their feet warm and our classrooms dry.

LATE TO SCHOOL

Please make every effort o get your son or daughter to school before the bell at 8:30am. If for some reason they will be late you are required to walk your child into the office and sign them in. This insures that your child’s attendance in carefully recorded.

LOST AND FOUND

The “Lost and Found Box is a good place to start looking for missing items. Periodically, we remind students to check the box for any items they may have lost. Please remind your child(ren) to check the Lost and Found Boxes if anything is lost.

Stop by the tables during Parent/ Guardian Interviews in the school foyer to look for any “lost clothing”.
