Monthly Essentials Focus---September
- Make eye contact. When someone is speaking, keep your eyes on him or her at all times. If someone makes a comment, turn and face that person.During discussions, respect other students’ comments, opinions, and ideas. When possible, make statements like, “I agree with John, and I also feel that…” or “I disagree with Sara. She made a good point, but I feel that…”
- If you are asked a question in a conversation, as a question in return. It is only polite to show others that you are just as interested in them as they are in you.
- Do not smack your lips, tsk, roll your eyes, or show disrespect with gestures.
- Always say thank you when given something. There is no excuse for not showing appreciation.
- When you are given something from someone, never insult that person by making negative comments about the gift or by insinuating that it wasn’t appreciated.
- In conversations with others, it is important to use complete sentences. For example, if a person asks, “How are you?’ instead of just responding “Fine,” you should say, “I’m doing fine, thank you. How about yourself?”
Monthly Essentials Focus---October
Essential 3 - Respectfully Speak to Others & Never Ask for More
Always say thank you when given something. If you don’t say it within 3 seconds of receiving that item, I will take it back. There is no excuse for not showing appreciation.
Use your manners (please, thank you, excuse me)
At times throughout the year, I will give rewards for good behavior, academic performance, and other acts worthy of praise. If you ever ask for a reward, however, it will not be given. It is rude to ask if you are getting something for good behavior. You should be good and try your best because you are trying to better yourself, not because you are anticipating a reward. I usually give some sort of reward to everyone who scores 100 on unit tests. If you make 100 and ask if you are getting something, no one who made 100 will be given anything.
Take pride in your work; not everyone in the real world gets a reward for a job well done.

Some Facts About Head Lice
Where children are present and playing, there is always the possibility of the presence of pediculus humanus capitis (head lice), which means there is a potential for there to be lice at school.
The WSD has aligned nurse practices with both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses and we ask that parents keep the following information in mind:
- Lice are not a disease.
- Lice do not reflect unsanitary homes or students.
- Lice are absolutely an inconvenience.
- By detecting lice early, both parents and nurses can get ahead in the process.
Listed below are links to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses. There is also a video on what to look for when assessing if your child has head lice.

Just a reminder regarding medication...
Medication - All medications, over-the-counter and prescription, must have a physician order form completed and signed by physician and parent. All medications must be delivered and picked up by an adult.
Please encourage your children to eat a healthy breakfast, bring a water bottle and snack to school and eat a good lunch.
Thank you!
