Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
August 30, 2019
A Very BUSY Week!
I love weeks like the one we just finished! We were very busy and accomplished so much. It feels good going into a long weekend knowing we gave our best and now deserve some much-needed rest!
We finished taking the Math and Reading NWEA tests. There are still a few students that need to finish and do make-ups, so as soon as they are finished I will print student growth reports. We will analyze the reports in class. It's fun to see the students compare their scores from previous years, to other kids in Carmel School, and to kids in around the state of Indiana. We will write a few data statements and create a goal based upon their results. Stay tuned...
I have given several different reading assessments over the past two weeks. I plan to teach the students how to enter their test data into a Google Sheets. Once we do this, they will be able to share their progress with you. Again, stay tuned...
As always, I am happy to meet to discuss your child's progress or to answer any questions you may have about 3rd Grade.
That's all I have for now...
Enjoy your long weekend!

Room 9 Celebrations
A few student highlights from our week:
- Rio has latched onto the first book in one of my favorite series - A Series of Unfortunate Events. We have had several discussions about the book. It's exciting to see his enthusiasm.
- Brock was proactive in asking for a break during the NWEA Reading Test. He went into the pod to clear his mind. When he came back into the classroom, he informed me that he did a yoga pose for stress relief. Since we, occasionally, do this during Community Circle, I was happy to see him using it to calm down.
- Kendall is really enjoying our class puzzle. During Brain Breaks, she can be found working on the puzzle - she is really good at it!
- Brandt received a compliment from Chris for being a great listener, following directions, and working hard!

Next Week...
- Finish up our GENRE study! We will review with a fun Jeopardy game.
- Learning how to ask deep questions using WH question words.
- Responding to an extended response questions about a text using RAP (restate, answer, prove - using details in the text).
Math:
We are getting back on track with a normal math routine each day. Our daily math schedule is as follows:
- 8:30 - 8:45 Students complete EXIT SLIP to show understanding of the concept taught the previous day. Mental Math Warm Up - we do review/challenge math problems together on the overhead. Students solve on their whiteboards.
- 8:45 - 9:00 Lesson Part 1. I introduce the learning target and get started teaching the concept.
- 9:00 - 9:20 Math Workshop. This is where I work with a small group of students or individual students to clarify misunderstandings, teach enrichment concepts, or remediate as necessary.
- 9:20 - 9:40 Lesson Part 2. I finish teaching the lesson and give students an assignment. Students are either working independently, with a partner, or with Mrs. Greene.
Next week we will work on the following skills:
- Bar Graphs
- Multiplication Number Stories
- Problem Solving - Using CUBES to solve word problems
I have signed your children up for xtramath - all students will begin on addition. We have not mastered those facts. If your child practices for 5-10 minutes each night, he/she will fly through addition and then advance to subtraction, then eventually get to multiplication. Look for your child's log in information for xtramath.org to come home next week.
Writing:
Each student created his/her own Writer's Checklist using Google Docs. The students will use this to "proof" his/her writing before calling it done. The Checklist includes the following:
- capitalization (important words, beginning of sentences, titles)
- punctuation
- sticks to the topic
- beginning, middle, end
- makes sense after rereading it
- neat work
Next week we will use children's picture books to inspire us to write creatively and to include details in our writing.
Social Studies: Unit 1 Geography of our World
We will wrap up our learning of concepts in Unit 1 next week. Did you hear that we are learning a song that will help us memorize the 50 states? I will be sure to videotape our class singing this fun son. We will create a FLIP BOOK which is a way for students to show their understanding of their place in the world. We will have a short assessment next Friday, September 6.Word Study:
- Base Words
- Root Words
- prefixes - suffixes
- Vowels/Consonants
- Syllables
We will take the HIGH FREQUENCY WORD Assessment next Friday. I will send the results home as soon as I grade them.
