HSA NEWSLETTER June 2022
Osborne Elementary
A NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
We're down to the single digits - only a handful of school days left in the year! We intend to finish strong, though, with exciting plans for field day and 5th-grade picnic. Keep reading below for more details about those events and other information to wrap up the year.
This is also my last newsletter as president, as my two years are up! I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has contributed to the HSA over these past two years, whether through volunteer hours, donations of food or money, or just encouraging words. A special thanks to all our committee chairs, who kept things running during unusual times - and particularly Heidi McGurgan, who was a hospitality superstar this year! And last but by no means least, thank you to the board members who served alongside me the past two years - Tracey Hartman, Christina Sheleheda, Lisa Minn, and Heidi Zutter - for their dedication to Osborne. We're lucky to have the first three sticking around next year as board members, but Heidi is "graduating" from Osborne as her youngest moves to the middle school - thanks for everything, Heidi!
We wish everyone a safe, happy, and healthy summer!
Cheers,
Traci Fruehauf
Summer Vacation
School resumes on Wednesday, August 24.
Field Day
The festivities will take place from 9am-11am for kindergarten through 2nd grade and 1:15 -3:15 pm for 3rd through 5th grades. We love having parents participate in Field Day as volunteers and we know you love being there! So much so, all our volunteer slots have been filled. But check the Sign Up link below in case any spots open up.
You MUST have an updated badge to participate!
Lunch Room Helpers
This is first opportunity to have parents volunteer in the building. The HSA helps students in the cafeteria during all lunch periods. We help the kids open lunch items like yogurts and juice boxes, get napkins, straws, utensils, etc. It's a great time to see your kids during lunch while also helping all the other students! There are available slots for all the remaining days of school. Please sign up to help if you can.
You MUST have a QV volunteer badge.
VOLUNTEER CLEARANCES
Speaking of volunteering.... QVSD has resumed printing volunteer badges! So if you need a new or updated badge, make sure to start the process now. If you have already submitted your clearances earlier this year, your badge may be on file at the Osborne front office.
At Osborne Elementary we could not do all that we do for children without the help of volunteers! The link below will take you to the QVSD page that lists the requirements necessary to volunteer in our building:
Wrapping up the School year:
Reminder from Mrs. Lindenfelser...
On Friday, June 3rd the teachers have a day of fun organized to celebrate all the DREAM cards the students have earned! They have planned a beach party and kindly ask that each child dress in beach-themed clothing and bring in a beach towel on which to sit for lunch outside (weather permitting).
In addition, Mrs. Lindenfelser has requested that on Monday, June 6, students wear their #bethekindkid tee-shirts for one last day this school year.
Yearbooks
The 2021-22 yearbooks are in! If you ordered a copy, it will come home with your student on June 3. If they wish, students may bring them back to school on June 6 and 7 to collect autographs.
5th-grade picnic
For the first time since 2019, 5th-grade picnic will once again be an opportunity for Osborne and Edgeworth students to come together! On the morning of June 6, Osborne will be hosting the entire 5th-grade team from Edgeworth. The Edgeworth students and teachers will arrive by bus, and the 5th-grade teams from both schools will guide the kids through some team-building activities and games. Then at lunchtime, all of the 5th-graders from both schools will have an outdoor pizza picnic on the grounds of Osborne. After lunch, the Edgeworth kids will return to their school, and the Osborne 5th grade will gear up for a fun afternoon of games, crafts, and Kona Ice, until their regular school dismissal time.

Lost & Found
The large collection of items that were in lost and found at the time of the Spring Book Fair/Art Show have been donated. However a new collection sweatshirts and water bottles, and hats, etc. is gathering. So be sure to have your child check the lost and found for items left behind before the end of the school year.
HSA Highlights from May:
Book Fair & Art show
We were delighted to see so many families at our book fair on May 12! The students loved taking advantage of the buy-one-get-one-free sale, and all proceeds will go right back into resources for our school.
We're grateful to Mrs. Stoeckle for coordinating the spring art show with the book fair, so that families could also enjoy some of the amazing art Osborne students have created this year!
Buddy Bench
Service project
All those crayons you donated to Osborne for our service learning project are being put to good use! Students have sorted the crayons into different batches (separating the gently used from the broken, and sorting by color), and have begun assembling individual packets of gently used crayons that will go to students at a local school district with limited resources (complete with the notes of encouragement that our students colored in April). Thank you to Mrs. Lindenfelser for the photos, and for guiding our students through this project!
Recycle for Reading
Don't forget the Recycle for Reading donation box is in the vestibule at school year-round - please keep this program in mind the next time you clear your students' shelves of books they've outgrown. Your child's old cast-off may become another's new treasure!
BookStop
BookStop is coming back! The Sewickley Public Library is teaming up with Quaker Valley Schools to bring the BookStop program to the Quaker Valley area. This partnership helps to distribute books to children in local communities. The BookStop will be running on Wednesday, June 15 (rain-date, Thursday, June 16). The bus route has three stops where books will be distributed:
- 9:30 a.m. - Sewickley YMCA (front entrance) - 625 Blackburn Road
- 10:45 a.m. - Osborne Elementary School - 1414 Beaver Road
- 12:00 p.m. – Leetsdale Splash Pad at Henle Park – Beaver St. and Ferry St.
