Falco Newsletter June 13th - 21st
2021-22 Newsletter for Five Oaks Middle School
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Falcon Families,
The last full week of school is upon us! We are very excited about all of the fun activities we have planned for the 17th and the 21st to celebrate student growth and success this school year! I think we can all agree it’s been a roller coaster of a year and we all need an opportunity to take a deep breath and reflect on how far we’ve come!
On the 17th, we will hold our first ever Falcon Family Fest! This event will be a showcase of student work (art, science, etc.) and an opportunity to picnic together out in the field! The event will culminate in a staff/student kick ball game! We are excited to have the opportunity to have some fun with all of you this Friday evening from 5-7. We were unable to secure food carts for the evening (fingers crossed for next year!) so bring a picnic dinner, blankets or chairs, and your best kickball cheers and join us for this fun family event! (There will also be an opportunity to sign giant cards for our departing staff members!)
The last day of school, June 21st, will be a day to celebrate and be in community! We are going to live stream our 8th grade award assembly for those who would like to view it. I am sorry that we can’t welcome guests at this time, but we have new Covid cases daily and don’t want to risk further spread.
This year, we are saying farewell to some current FOMS staff members. The following staff members are retiring:
Joy Bruening - PE
Ann Ezell - English
Paula Inglett - English
Catherine “Petey” Peterson - Social Studies
Susanne Pope - Technology Support Specialist
We also have a few staff members moving to positions in other buildings or moving on to opportunities outside of education including:
Michael Sullivan will be heading to Highland Park to teach Math.
Kevin Zmolek will also be heading to Highland Park to teach band and choir.
Fazela Bandukwala will be heading to Highland Park as a Special Education Paraeducator.
Heidi Elvidge will be joining Westview High School as their school psychologist. Luckily for those heading to WVHS next year she will be continuing to serve some Five Oaks students as they transition to high school!
Kia McCann will be leaving FOMS for other opportunities.
Molly Soloway is leaving FOMS to welcome her new baby!
We had several temporary positions this school year. These individuals contributions to FOMS were invaluable as we navigated this year:
Ellie Nation - Front Office
Roberto Moreno - Paraeducator
Sarah Martin - Paraeducator
We want to thank all of these educators for their service to students and families at Five Oaks. We have been so lucky to have the people here that we’ve had this year to help shepherd students through a tough year.
I also want to thank all of our Falcon Families. You have been incredibly supportive and generous with your time, gifts, and grace.
I am so excited about what next year will bring! I believe we have an incredible community of educators, families, and most importantly students who will do great things!
I look forward to see you all this Friday for our Family Falcon Fest!
Catherine "Petey" Peterson - Estudios Sociales

Ellie Nation - Oficina
principal Roberto Moreno - Paraeducador
Sarah Martin - Paraeducador

What does college and career readiness look like?
No matter what post secondary path high school graduates choose, students must develop certain essential skills to design their own futures: critical thinking, collaboration, reading, writing, and relationship building. The development of these skills is rooted in belief in self. If students believe they are capable, there is a foundational confidence to learn and a resiliency to overcome setbacks. When educators believe in students, learning and confidence are activated. With teacher support for developing a growth mindset and the academic skills they need for future success, students grow to see their capabilities and find their own way.
What Educators Need To Do Teachers and other adults on a school campus play an important role in student success. AVID supports educators and transforms the learning environment into one where students are challenged, supported, and provided the tools needed to succeed. To do this, educators must: ∙ Insist on Rigor — Educators across the school provide learning experiences where every student is challenged, engaged, and develops a greater ownership in their learning through increasingly complex levels of understanding. ∙ Break Down Barriers — Educators are champions for equity who actively seek out and eliminate educational barriers that would limit or restrict students’ access to meaningful and challenging learning opportunities. ∙ Align the Work — Educators increasingly align their practices and beliefs to the common purpose of preparing all students for college and career readiness as well as students’ long-term success in college, career, and life. ∙ Advocate for Students — Educators consistently advocate for equity and access to challenging coursework for all and help students find their voice and achieve their aspirations through creating strong relationships and providing appropriate guidance.
