Online Learning, the Woods Way

Woods students continue to learn, grow, and thrive, even online. It is humbling to see how they have risen to the challenges and new "opportunities" of distance learning, and hear how they are making the experience work for them. Some of the positives students have shared with me include being able to set their own schedules, having time before classes start each day to get organized, and learning to use video-conferencing and other tech tools more effectively.

This year, there's a record number of student-led clubs, ranging from topics like environmental action, film study, politics, origami, French and Spanish, and two dozen other topics. We encourage all students to join at least one club. It's great way to meet people, earn service hours, explore interests, develop leadership skills, and participate in the life of the school.

The WCS School Board voted, at the September meeting, to continue remote learning through the fall. The high school faculty is committed to planning and providing rich and robust classes and adapting as needed.

Of course, there's no substitute for being together! In the meantime, your thoughts are welcome: Feedback Form

College Knowledge

College advising at Woods is a team effort. Advisors provide support and information targeted to each class, and Senior Advisors shepherd their cohorts through the college application process, explore alternatives, and provide perspective for graduating seniors.

This year, we're hosting virtual visits from a variety of college and weekly webinars for seniors working on the application process.

Upcoming information sessions include:

  • Davidson - Oct. 7
  • CCCC - Oct. 14
  • Duke - Oct. 21

We also want to make families aware of resources like:

Scholarship Opportunities

During the fall, many seniors apply for scholarships of many varieties.

Starting that process before senior year is HUGE! Researching scholarships can be very confusing and it takes time, so we encourage interested families to look online, investigate schools and programs of interest, and get to know what resources are out there.

One of the most comprehensive blogs is from JLV Counseling, which publishes weekly, monthly, and themed lists of scholarships available throughout the year.

Look at the lists and consider signing up for updates!

Students should review their class Classroom for announcements about scholarships as well.

Staying in Touch

This newsletter is published during the first week of each month to provide information relevant to families of high school students. For grade-level communications, or topics that come up mid-month, I will email parent groups as needed.

You will also want to watch for the Woods News from the Front Office, and Athletics updates from Ms. Floyd.
