Dr. Kay B. Gresham Academic Challenge
AP Environmental Science
AP Environmental Science students added fish to their ecocolumn. These fish are important for the cycling of nutrients in the column and will help to raise soil fertility levels by adding nitrates to the soil.
We also started a small aquaponics tank in the class in which fish provide nutrients for growing plants. This tank will hopefully be a breeding tank since we have a few pregnant females.
RHS Agriculture Department
-Monday is the last day to bring in donations of standard size cans of corn and green beans! They will be donated to the CHEW Program. They should be placed in the decorated boxes at the front office to vote for Mr. FFA & FFA Sweetheart!
-Next FFA Meeting is Tuesday March 5th during A Block!

Easily shaped, pliable.
Warm Play-Do is much more malleable than cold Play-Do which can be difficult to mold
Math ACT Problem of the Week
The answer to last weeks question was 43 mph. 17x = 221, so x = 13, but that means he is traveling 13 mph over the speed limit. You have to add the 13 to the speed limit of 30mph.
When x=1/2, what is the value of (8x-3)/(x)?
F. 1/2
G. 2
H. 5/2
J. 5
K. 10
Answer to this week's problem will be posted in next weeks newsletter!
AP Statistics
In AP Statistics, students made and dropped paper helicopters to prove the normal distribution percentages for a normal curve. Students had to pick a spot on the wall, measure the height of the drop, and drop the helicopter 40 times from the same height. Someone in the group timed how long it took the helicopter to hit the ground. Another member of the group observed that the drops were considered good drops and recorded the times. Once the drops had been completed students calculated quantitative data and analyzed the data.
Art
8 Students from RHS and 9 Students from White Oak High School are going to the Asheboro Zoo for the Zoo Snooze. Students will get to sleep at the zoo and have a behind the scenes tour of the Zoo as well as make art at the zoo. Students will also get to tour several pottery studios in the Asheboro area.
Band/Choir
The RHS Concert Band and Choirs will be in concert on March 5, 2019 at 7:00 PM in the Auditorium. The groups will be presenting their selections for the Music Performance Adjudication to held later in the month.

Busch Gardens trip payments should all be paid by Feb 27th. Band and Choir parents please ask Mr. Shreckengost if you have any questions or concerns.
NC Eastern Regional Orchestra
Orchestra
The RHS Orchestra has had a busy semester. The most recent event, Onslow All County High School Honors Orchestra, took place on February 1st and 2nd. Students from all high schools in the county except Dixon auditioned back on January 7 for a seat in the group. Four RHS orchestra students were successful and participated in the concert on February 2 at Jacksonville High School: Blake Boaz (cello), Andrew Maldonado (cello), Allen Sanderson (principal viola), and Dylan Verdict (viola). The three seniors (Blake, Allen, and Dylan) have been in in this orchestra all four years of high school.
Besides the December 18 Winter Concert, the entire orchestra has performed in a variety of locations to share music with a different audience. On December 7, we performed a variety of seasonal music at the Jacksonville mall around lunch time. December 20th we traveled to Ellis Airport to play upstairs for people arriving at the airport and everyone working there. Both of these performances also let people living in the area know that Onslow County specifically has an orchestra program and broadly supports the performing arts!
Our final field trip was to Johnson Primary School in Camp LeJeune. This was our third time to go and play for the pre-K through 2nd grade classes at the school. The kids really enjoy seeing and hearing instruments being played right in front of them, sometimes conducting the music along with us. Orchestra members and myself also answered some of their questions, and sometimes let them hold an instrument for a minute. All these performances are very different from performing for family members in an auditorium where the audience is quiet and claps politely between pieces, valuable learning experiences for high school musicians.
