Principal's Letter
Greetings Lake Windward Elementary Families,
Happy New Year!! I truly hope you had a magnificent winter break! Whether you curled up at home in your favorite PJs and relaxed or traveled the world to experience exciting adventures, I hope it was just what you wanted and needed! My family and I enjoyed spending time with extended family in warm and sunny Clearwater, FL. It was great to have downtime to play, relax, reflect and rejuvenate!
We had an awesome first week back at school! We kicked off the second semester with a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) assembly. We took this opportunity to remind students of our three schoolwide rules: Be Responsible, Be Respectful and Be Safe. In addition, we introduced a new positive cafeteria behavior incentive system which involves a competition between our school's “5 houses”. So far, it’s going great! Ask your child which "house" they are in!
I am so proud to have recently learned that LWE earned the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement Platinum Award for Highest Performing for the third year in a row! In addition, LWE earned the Silver award for Greatest Gains! Lake Windward ES is one of four schools in the district to achieve Platinum status for student achievement. Our LWE students and teachers are working hard and getting results!
I'd like to say a special thank you to our LWE PTO for our school's 30th birthday gift, a new shaded outdoor classroom! I know many students and teachers will enjoy this space for many years to come! Thanks to all parents who support the PTO fundraisers and make projects like this possible!!
This upcoming weekend is a long weekend in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. We will not have school on Monday, January 20th. I hope that your family enjoys the extra time together!
Warm regards,
Julie Morris

Procedure for Absence Approval in Extenuating Circumstances
Students should be present in school every day unless illness or other extenuating circumstances exist. The Georgia Board of Education lawfully excuses students for the following reasons: personal illness, death in the immediate family, religious holidays, and other educational days as pre-approved by the school principal. The principal has at his/her discretion according to Board Policy the option to approve a maximum of six (6) days per student per school year in extenuating circumstances. Parents/guardians must notify the principal of their request by completing the request form located on the school website at least two weeks prior to the absence. Submission of parental/guardian request does not grant automatic approval. A school administrator or designee will contact the parents/guardian upon the final decision. As in the past, absences for illness, death in the family or religious holidays can be approved by your child's teacher by sending in a signed note from you.
1. The principal approval form is to be used for extenuating circumstances only, as stated in the information above.
2. Two weeks ahead of the planned absence, print and complete the request form located on the Lake Windward website.
3. One form is required per student.
4. Submit the completed, signed, and dated form to the Lake Windward front office.
5. Your student’s attendance record will be taken into consideration when reviewing your request.
6. A copy of the decision to accept, decline or amend your request, will be sent to you and your child’s homeroom teacher.
Email requests will not be accepted
