Growth Mindset
The Two Types of Mindsets (from www.developgoodhabits.com)
More than 30 years ago, psychologist Carol Dweck and her colleagues at Stanford University did research on how students respond to setbacks. They noted that some students (children and young people) seemed capable of bouncing back after experiencing failure, while others were thoroughly devastated, even with minor failures.
This observation led Dr. Dweck and her team to conceptualize the theory about growth mindset and fixed mindset. The following characteristics are associated with each mindset.
1. Growth Mindset
- · The willingness to confront challenges
- · Believing that traits, knowledge, and skills are not predetermined, but can be developed and altered through effort and/or training
- · Failure is viewed as a springboard for growth
- · Passionate about learning
2. Fixed Mindset
- · Risk avoidance and fear of new experiences
- · Believing that traits, knowledge, and skills are already predetermined, and no amount of effort can change them
- · Mistakes are viewed as failures, not as opportunities for learning and/or growth
- · Have the urge to repeatedly prove themselves and seek approval
FREE Parenting Resources
Jewish Family Services FREE Online Parenting Support English and Spanish: Jewish Family Services is offering the Positive Parenting Program online for our English and Spanish Speaking elementary parents and families. Interested parents can contact a representative to discuss the program and determine if it's a good fit. Parents can go through the program at their own pace (through a phone, tablet or laptop). Each week, a parent educator will check in with the parent by phone to see how they are doing and answer any questions.
Any other parents feel like this some days?
Contacting Counselors
BMMS counselors are currently working from home and checking emails periodically throughout the regular school day. Please email us and we will get back to you accordingly.
If you'd like to schedule a conversation with your counselor please see contact info below. Due to the nature of phone/video limitations, individual social emotional counseling will be referred to outside mental health providers. These appointments will be for general questions, check-ins, and referrals. You can also request an appointment by clicking the hyperlinks with the office hour day and times. This will take you to a quick form to fill out that will go to the appropriate counselor.
