Ease Your Test Stress with … The Dynamic Dozen!
Summarized from The Anti-Test Anxiety Society
by: Julia Cook
1) Tell yourself you can do this! TEST stands for “Think Each Situation Through”. You get to show how much you have learned and what you know… Lucky you!
2) Do not cram! It’s hard on your brain! Instead, spread studying out over a few days and look over your materials daily leading up to your big test.
3) When you are studying, draw a picture in your brain of what you are learning. Try to visualize the material you are taking in.
4) Exercise and stay active every day. It will help you feel good, and it’s good for your brain!
5) Get a good night’s sleep before a big test. You do not want your brain and body to feel worn out.
6) Stay relaxed. This one is so important! If you feel yourself becoming stressed, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and think happy thoughts in your head. Think about your happiest place in your mind and go on a mini vacation in your head!
7) Always read directions slowly and carefully. If you do not understand something, ask your teacher for clarification.
8) Skim the test over once. Check out how long it is and what it’s about. You do not want to spend too much time on one section.
9) Write down any important stuff that you needed to memorize (formulas, facts, definitions) at the top of your test or on scratch paper. You do not want to clog up your brain and forget to use them.
10) Do the easy questions first if you can! It will help build up your confidence. Then you will have more time to work on the harder questions last.
11) On multiple choice tests, cross out any answers that absolutely do not make sense. This will help you narrow down the right answer.
12) Check a random five. Pick any five questions and recheck your answers. If you have time, recheck 5 more!
These helpful hints, and more information on this topic, can be found in the book The Anti-Test Anxiety Society by Julia Cook.
