E. O. Muncie Learning Commons
Creativity, Curiosity, Innovation
April 2019
We are headed down the home stretch!
Here's what happened in the wonderful world of the Learning Commons last month. We celebrated National School Library month, 3D printing projects started, Earth Day, Digital Breakouts and Skype in the Classroom.
We hope you enjoy this issue!
Thank you,
Mrs. Stevenson and Mrs. Clerkin
School Library Month
In honor of School Library month, our students decorated a beautiful wall display right outside the Learning Commons.
We love seeing what you all value about the EOM Learning Commons!
Guess How Many Books are in the Learning Commons contest
We hosted a little contest too! Students and staff had the opportunity to guess how many books are in the Learning Commons.
Our school has 8,214 books. We had two separate parts to this contest. One was for the students and the other was for the teachers.
The winners each received a sweet treat!
You've Been Booked!
In celebration of School Library month, we "Booked" all of our teachers! We chose books for each grade level. Then we snuck into their rooms while they were away and left their package.
It was fun being sneaky!
3D Printing Bubble wands!
We introduced our 2nd-grade students to 3D printing by showing them a short introductory video. They watched in amazement at what a 3D printer can do. From there, students were introduced to Morphi (a 3D design app) to understand the basics of 3D design. After a few weeks of exploring Morphi, students were given the challenge of designing a 3D model bubble wand. Before they began working on their design, they had to sketch their design, make sure it was the correct size and thickness.
Let the printing begin!
Look for photos and videos in our next newsletter of students testing their bubble wands!
3D Printing Custom Cookie Cutters!
For the past month, third and fourth graders have used the free cookie caster website to custom design a cookie cutter. The students came up with a wide variety of design ideas including animals, states, letters, and hobbies.
We hope mom enjoys her new cookie cutter!
(Note: the cookie cutters should not be given to younger brothers or sisters to use as a teething object.
A Skype Chat with Dr. Jane Goodall
What a special treat for EOMs Kindergarten and first grade students to listen to a short, live presentation with Dr. Jane Goodall!
Dr. Jane Goodall is a scientist and conservationist. She travels the world promoting wildlife conservation and empowering people to make a difference in the world. Check out her website here.
Her Skype session was public to all students and classrooms anywhere in the world and we were registered as one of those classes.
We learned a little bit about her extensive work with chimpanzees, which started in the 1960s. She answered questioned from kids around the world.
Dr. Jane Goodall urges students to find small ways to make a big difference in the world. She talked about her own program called Roots & Shoots which you can learn about here.
National Scribble Day!
Kindergarten and first-grade students also celebrated National Scribble Day (which is actually March 27). It's a new event and pretty cool. It is based off of Diane Alber's book, I'm Not Just a Scribble. The story is about inclusiveness, empathy, and creativity.
The fun stickers made it even more special! Lots of happy laughter with this project.
Calling all library books!
About us
- Get students excited about the library space and learning.
- Give students opportunities to work on engaging tasks.
- Provide spaces to work collaboratively, think critically and creatively.
Also, to transition to a place where students DO stuff, not simply a place where students GET stuff.
