On Friday, December 19th at 12 we will be inviting all of our families in to hear what amazing writing we have been working on this 9 weeks. We hope that you all can join us to celebrate our writing accomplishments. Feel free to RSVP, we may try to have snacks.

Curriculum Corner:

We tested main idea in multi paragraph texts today. Our next area of focus for reading will be the 5 W's of non-fiction.

For example, if a student reads a nonfiction book about penguins they may be asked some of the following questions.

Who is this text about? (Penguins)

What is one thing you learned that you didn't know about before you read this book? (I learned that Penguins are in the bird family.)

When do Penguins swim in the sea? (Penguins swim in the sea to look for food and to escape from predators)

Where do Penguins live? (Penguins usually live in cold places. For example, emperor penguins live in Antarctica.)

Why do penguins live together in colonies? (For protection)

How do penguins have babies? )Penguins are birds, they lay eggs. They usually lay 2 eggs. The mom and dad take turns keeping the egg warm)

This week we are finishing up a unit on money. Students were asked to id coins and count a small collection containing either quarters and pennies, nickels and pennies, or dimes and pennies. For a challenge, have your child count money often at home. Include dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. You can also see if they can make trades with you to make their counting easier.

Next week we will start a unit on graphing.

Information writing continued.

Please make sure your child is starting their sentences with capital letter and using the correction punctuation each week with their spelling homework.

Social Studies

Government continued.

We are now looking at our local and state government. We will focus on Federal when we return from Christmas Break.
