Five Oaks Weekly Staff Bulletin
9/17/18 - 9/21/18
A Note to the staff
With rain approaching, please remind students to walk in the halls. The concrete floors get very slippery and our goal is for no students to get hurt because they slipped and fell.
We will continue to let the students in the classroom hallways at 8:55. It was expressed that with everyone teaching class at 9:15 that the time before school has become even more precious. Feel free to keep your door locked until 9:10ish. It is difficult to keep all the students contained in the cafeteria and commons so it is necessary to let them into the hallway so they have more room to roam.
Please don't dismiss your class early at the end of the day. Kids are in the hall early and it is disruptive for classes that have students working until the bell rings.
Enjoy your weekend.
Reminders and Information
- Please remember if you send an email for behavior assistance or information that all admin and grade level counselor be included. In the case of needing immediate help, please dial “0”.

I spoke to Heather Burns and made plans with her for her visit in October. She will be at Five Oaks on October 25th and 26th so you will need to get a sub for those two days. She would like everyone to be through the 1st bend of “A Deep Study of Character” unit in all three grades. You will then have artifacts Bend I to share and study using a tuning protocol. You will be able to work through “problems of practice” with her and then study Bends II and III in lab sites and meetings.
The plan is to meet with Mountain View teachers during Early Release time on Wednesday to focus on writing. I know it is a “teacher directed” Early Release, but hope that you choose to participate in this opportunity to work with teachers from another school.

Certified Teacher Evaluations
As I told all of you on Wednesday, Student Growth Goals are no longer required. Each teacher will develop a Professional Goal(s) and connect it to a domain and indicator(s) in the 5D Rubric.
We ask that each of you complete the self-assessment in PIVOT to help you develop your goal for improvement. Please finalize it when you have completed it so that we have access to it when we meet with each of you. The evaluator assignments and the 5D Rubric is linked here. You will be receiving an email from the admin assigned to you to set up goal meetings. They are to be completed before the end of October. I had to make a couple revisions so please check which administrator has been assigned your evaluation.

There are rolls of graph paper on the butcher paper/bulletin board paper carts in the Library. This is an often missed option. Check it out!
Students ARE ALLOWED to drop off Chromebooks in the Library before going to the cafeteria if they’d like to use the device at lunchtime. Books, games, and hang out time is always an option for them, too! It’s the cool place to be.

Unfortunately, banning books that address prevalent issues within our society creates social stigmas for youth whose lived experiences mirror the stories found in print. To say that certain real-life themes are inappropriate for youth, based on one person’s beliefs, trivializes the experiences of so many others. ~ Andrea Q. JamisonGraphing m & m’s in Harvey’s class. A Message from Suzanne Peerenboom
Suzanne Peerenboom will be out of the building on Thursday from 12:30 - 4:00.
I am looking for volunteers to try something new in their classes!
I would love to break out the Sphero’s and do some coding with timelines, or angle measures.
Makey Makey’s can be used to make interactive boards, maps, timelines, pictures etc.
Rubik’s cubes can be used for community building, engineering, problem solving etc.
Let me know if you are interested.
Staff, I know there are amazing things happening around school and I can’t possibly see it all. If you want to share what you are doing on Social Media I have the power to make that happen. Send me an image, blurb, or combination of the two and I will post it for you. I can post on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter! Let me know if you have questions.
Don’t forget to Check TeacherSource for all your Week 3 opportunities!

A note from our Sulakha Hassan
My name is Sulakha Hassan and I work for the S.P.A.C.E (schools, parents and communities engaged) program through the Center for African Immigrants and Refugee's Organization (CAIRO). As a non-profit organization that seeks to enhance and achieve parity for the diverse African Immigrant and refugee communities here, we work through a lens of social justice, education, collaborative leadership and service advocacy. Being a S.P.A.C.E agent, I primarily work with school aged children starting from preschool through highschool and specifically now I am working at Five Oaks Middle School and Aloha Highschool. I would describe my position as a cultural navigator helping teachers navigate cultural and family contexts. When it comes to students, I help with academics, understanding school expectations, as well as mentoring students. In addition to that I assist parents in understanding the school system, empower them, and inform parents on how they can get involved in their child’s education and connect them to resources.
As of now, my schedule is as follows:
- Monday's and Tuesday's 9am-3:30pm at Five Oaks Middle School
- Wednesday's and Thursday's 8am-2:30pm at Aloha Highschool
I am only available for 4 hours on Fridays. I usually allocate my time between office work, contacting parents, checking in with staff, students etc. I can be available to either school if notified a head of time. The best way to contact me currently is via email at sah7@pdx.edu until my CAIRO email gets situated and through my phone 619-623-1763. Thank you all for the work that you do and I look forward to meeting everyone throughout the school year!
Best,
Sulakha

attention CLUBS
If you are running a club this school year please email Kristy by Friday 9/7 with the club title and description.
It would be lovely if you prepare a flyer to publicize your club and have it ready for BTSN on the 13th.
Clubs will be on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:50-4:50. ALL students will receive a snack (small meal) whether they are staying for a club or not. This will begin mid-October.
Mondays are College Day
Teachers - a few things to remind your students
All food must remain in the cafeteria.
We are a hood and hat free school. Please help enforce this rule when you are in the hallway in the morning and during passing time. This goes for ear buds too!
Thank you!
