Deretchin Summer Update

Hello Deretchin Families!

I hope you are enjoying your remaining weeks of summer! I am SO EXCITED about the upcoming 2023-2024 school year! As I enter my third year serving as your principal, I am so proud of the students, families, and staff of Deretchin Elementary School. The entire Deretchin family is committed to developing a learning community where all students:

  • Feel both physically and emotionally safe;
  • Develop a sense of belonging in a caring learning community;
  • Experience academic success while maximizing their learning potential.

We look forward to continuing to build relationships with our families that are collaborative, positive, and supportive. We have a wonderful year ahead of us!

Sincerely,

Tina Oliver

New to Deretchin Tour-Friday, August 4

We would like to invite all our new Pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade students and parents to attend our "New to Deretchin Tour" on Friday, August 4. The times are as follows:

PK- 4:30-5:15

K-5:15-6:00

1st-6th- 6:00-6:45

This is a "come and go" event, so you are welcome to come anytime between these scheduled times. Each family will be provided with a tour of Deretchin as well as receive some school-related information.

Meet the Teacher-Monday, August 7

We know many of you are anxiously awaiting one of the best events of the school year- "Meet the Teacher!" We are excited for this event, too!

Our "Meet the Teacher" is a "come and go" event, and it will be from 5:00-7:00 for all grade levels.

*A video will be sent to the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten parents on August 7 with important information about our school and tips for making the transition to "big kid school" a success!

New Deretchin Portable Classrooms-4th Grade

Deretchin continues to experience an increase in student growth. Due to the increase, our main building is no longer able to accommodate all of our students. Many campuses have portables to help with student growth, and we are especially excited that Deretchin has received brand new portables this summer. Our fourth grade teachers and students will be in portables beginning next school year. Fourth grade was selected because they are an older grade level and have fewer transitions. We have spent a lot of time planning the logistics so that we can be fully prepared for everything in August. Our goal is to make the transition to fourth grade as smooth as possible.

PTO Information

Dear parents,

The PTO is excited for the upcoming school year! To make it a fantastic year for our students and teachers, we need your help. First, get connected with the PTO by visiting and registering on our website, deretchinpto.org. Next, order your "spirit wear" that we will have ready for you to pick up at Meet the Teacher. After that, sign up to be a volunteer under the “Resources” tab on the website. When opportunities arise, we will reach out first to those that have expressed interest in helping in a particular area before sending signups to the whole school. Make sure you also fill out the CISD Volunteer Application which is also under the “Resources” section. Finally, once you find out your child’s homeroom teacher, please update this information in the directory.
