*I understand and know that some students have had a pop up error while working on ixl.com I have spoken to those students about some ways to work around that until we are able to figure out the fix.
1. Restart your chromebook before starting any homework at home.
2. If you are able to, it may work better to do your ixl.com on a home computer/ipad that allows you to use Safari as the web browser.
3. Try to refresh or log out and log back in.
Please let me know if there are any problems. Thank you!

Social Studies
Units 6 and 7: Government and Westward Expansion (6 weeks)
We will further explore the Constitution and the three branches of government: Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. We seek to understand how they work together and also keep each other in check, and we will explore this through simulating the three branches in the classroom. Part of Unit 6 will once again focus on the Bill of Rights, especially when we carry out our simulation, and the importance of the rights we are guaranteed as citizens.
Westward Expansion will focus on the idea of manifest destiny, the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark, and the Gold Rush. We want to understand the variety of reasons people began to move West. This occurred early in our country’s history and we want to understand how this helped the United States expand beyond being only 13 states.
Reading
We will focus some of our reading time to biographies and autobiographies in search of figurative and sensory language devices. Inferencing, drawing conclusions, and providing text evidence will continue to be important as we work through these units as well.
Students will continue to work with their Book Clubs to discuss the books they are reading. They will continue to share their impressions, insights, and general thoughts about the books. They will also continue to track their discussion points and their overall progress using their reading journals.
Writing
Students will continue to utilize the writing process (brainstorm, draft, revise, edit, publishing) when developing expository essays, personal narratives, and persuasive essays, or informational essays. In addition, students will be working on writing informal and formal letters making sure to incorporate figurative and sensory language. We will spiral back to punctuation and remind ourselves how important proper punctuation is to our comprehension of any text. We will also begin to focus heavily on the revision and editing steps of the writing process.
Math:
We have started FRACTIONS! For the next two Units, we will be exploring addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions with unequal denominators. To be successful with fractions, students really need to have a strong foundation for recalling math multiplication facts, and being able to make connections from the math to the real world. You can help at home by taking time to review multiplication facts, equivalent fractions, understanding the decimal equivalent for our benchmark fractions of 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4. Have your student help with recipes, measurements and food that is easily divided into groups. These real world connections will help in a HUGE way!
5.3H: Addition/Subtractions of fractions with unequal denominators
5.3K: relate decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals (ex. 2/5 = 4/10 = 0.40)
5.4H: Algebraic Reasoning
5.4F: Simplify a numerical expression (PEMDAS)
5.3I: Multiply a fraction and a whole number using models
5.3J/K: Divide a whole number by a unit fraction and a unit fraction by a whole number using models and the traditional algorithm.

Science Matters:
Space Science is our focus for the next few weeks. We begin with Characteristics of Sun, Earth, Moon followed by Day and Night. We will end this study with Weather and Climate. As with Earth Science, we will utilize models to simulate the real world.
Earth Science TEKS 5.8ABCD:
TEKS 5.8AB Weather and Climate
TEKS 5.8C Day and Night
TEKS 5.8D Characteristics of Sun, Earth, Moon
What can you do to help your child at home? Talk about differences between the Sun, Earth, and Moon; watch a weather forecast with your child; help them notice shadows at different times of the day. Also, please utilize Stemscopes learning resources, games, and video glossary for review at home.
You will find vocabulary Quizlets, Blendspace activities, Slideshows, and Menu Plans in Google Classroom Mannen Science 2017-18 that will also be good for your child to review at home.
