Carr's Kiddos
This Week in First Grade
Week of September 15-19, 2014
International Dot Day was an amazing success on Monday! The Darby Creek and Alton Darby communities came together to create one large, human dot. This symbolized the coming together of two communities to leave their mark on the world.
Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to our Curriculum Night. I understand that this is a very busy time of year. If you were unable to make it, the presentation is available on our class web page. Just go to the Curriculum page. You should be able to view it right on your computer. If you are viewing it on an iPad, you will need to have the Prezi app installed. If you have any questions, just let me know.
This week, the students continued their Guidance lessons with Mrs. Hawley, learning about BIG problems (someone could get hurt; these are serious) and small problems (no one is in danger). If you have a BIG problem, you should immediately tell an adult. If you have a small problem, you could try to think of your choices for solving it. We learned nine with Kelso's wheel. Students will be bringing home their own wheel next week.
We joined Mrs. Merkle in the Media Center for a lesson on choosing Just Right Books. This will help when they begin choosing their own books to bring home next week. Ask them about the "5 finger rule" for picking a book they they can read on their own.
On Friday, we met with our 5th grade buddies from Mrs. Cercone's room. The buddies learned about each other and discovered the interests that they have in common. The 5th graders then shared a book with their 1st grade buddies. We will meet with each other often throughout the school year.
Please make sure that you are checking the green Friday Folders over the weekend, removing all of the papers, and returning them on Monday. Keep in mind that with all of the communication from the classroom being via email or our website, and most of the district communications coming through the digital flyers, there may be some weeks that the green folder will be empty. Just send it back on Monday.
We have some great events coming up in the month of October. The 2nd Annual AD/DC Back in Back Warrior Dash will take place on Saturday, October 4th. See the Warrior Dash website for more information: http://addcbackinbackwarriordash.com. The first grade Technology Night will be on October 8th at 6:30 (bring your first grader). Our first ever EdCamp for Kids will be on October 10th. You should have received the course catalog in your child's Friday Folder. Please make sure to look through it together, make their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice selections, and return it by September 24th. Also in October is our Walk-a-Thon. If you didn't get your t-shirt order in, the deadline has been extended to September 25th (remember, your Darby Creek student will receive their t-shirt for FREE!).
There is so much more going on at Darby Creek than I can fit in my newsletter! Please see the eNews that I forwarded to you, or sign up to receive it directly to your inbox. Don't miss any of the great happenings in OUR school!
As always, you can find all this and more on our class website. If there is anything you need to know, but can't find on the web site, please send me an email and let me know. It is there for all of us, so I want to make sure that you are getting the most out of it too.
Thanks, and have a great week!
Mrs. Carr
A Few Reminders
This and That...
• You can receive my text alerts by texting @carrsk to (614) 678-8569
• Our Specials schedule is posted every week on the front page of our class website as well as within the class calendar. Please check for Gym days as the children must be wearing appropriate footwear to participate.
• Please help your child practice his/her lunch number. This is used not only for purchasing lunch and milk, but will also be their computer login number.
• We also ask that if your child will be wearing shoes with laces that you help them learn to tie their shoes themselves. I found this great video that shows an incredibly simple way to learn: http://tinyurl.com/pgxbb47
• Bike Riders: Only 4th and 5th Graders may ride their bikes to school AND a bike registration/permission form must be completed and signed by the parent and student in order to do so. Forms are available in the office.
