School Bus Driver Appreciation Day
Little Known Black History of Amelia Island
Thanks to the idea and coordination of Mrs. Thea Laine McKendree at Fernandina Beach High School, students got to listen to Mrs. Joy Lawson- one of their teachers- speak about "Little Known Black History of Amelia Island." She spoke of the impact and legacies of Abraham Lincoln Lewis- founder of American Beach, his two influential great-granddaughters, and Mrs. Lawson's great grandfather, Douglas Anderson. With the tech support of Jude Swearingen, Mrs. Lawson was able to deliver an informative and engaging lesson for our Pirate community.
Twister
What better way to practice your left and right than a fun game of twister? Mrs. Lesoine's Access Points class at Fernandina Beach Middle had so much fun and worked on that all-important skill simultaneously.
Dinosaurs!
Callahan Elementary Kindergarteners spent two weeks studying dinosaurs! Students spent time tackling information texts, key details, graphing, sorting and classifying, nature of a scientist, and so much more!
They studied dinosaur "poop" to see if the dinosaur was a herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore. Students had to use deductive reasoning to see which category the dinosaur would be in based on the objects left behind in the poop. Carnivores had bones, feathers, and hair; herbivores had leaves and twigs, and omnivores had both.
Students were highly engaged with the learning environment and hands-on lessons!
Cookies
Mrs. Lesoine's Access Points students at Fernandina Beach Middle School had a great time decorating cookies for Valentine's Day. Still, the best part was eating these delicious cookies (kits provided by Kat Sicotte from Emma Love Hardee). The students also painted heart-shaped boxes then filled them with candy to surprise their mothers.
Black History Month Studies
The students in Mrs. Ballard, Mrs. Godbolt, and Mrs. Gibbs' classes at Wildlight Elementary School celebrated Black History Month by diving into texts and watching videos to learn more about the influential African Americans that make up our nation's history. The students participated in arts & crafts, writing, reading, and games that focused on learning facts about people like George Washington Carver, Ruby Bridges, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and more!
Career Shadow Day
Introduction to Career Shadow Day. A local member of the community was informed about a student's love for exotic cars. The person showed up at Fernandina Beach Middle School and took the lucky boy out for a short ride. Later, arrangements were made for the boy to shadow Mr. Corbin, owner of Corbin Motors in Fernandina Beach. Zachary plans to work one day for either Porsche or Ferrari. Exciting, fast times for sure.
Hope Squad
A new organization at Fernandina Beach High School, Hope Squad, shined the light on suicide prevention by encouraging students and staff to wear yellow. They also wrote encouraging chalk notes on sidewalks, made posters, and even had a Stress Shredder station at lunch. HOPE Squad is comprised of students who were nominated by their peers and trained by our advisors, Harper Spencer, Carol Romack, and Sarah Twardy. This group strives to promote connectedness, encourage mental wellness, reduce mental health stigma, and prevent substance abuse. It's a movement to "empower students to seek help and save lives." Amelia Island Book Festival's Authors in Schools
Author Sophia Ghotz signed copies of her books for 4th grades students at Yulee Elementary School.
Callahan Elementary welcomed author Kentrell Martin for our annual Authors in Schools Day. Mr. Martin is the author of the Shelly’s Adventures series. The main character goes on adventures and teaches her friends and readers some signs in American Sign Language (ASL). Mr. Martin read his latest book, Shelly Goes to New York. Every student in the school received a free copy of the book courtesy of the Amelia Island Book Festival. Students had a great time learning about New York City, and they also learned about 15 new ASL signs!
Family Fun
Callahan Intermediate families enjoyed a night of fun. CIS hosted Bingo for Books, STEM Night, and Family Bool Fair Night all in one night!
Text Feature Surgery
Students in Mrs. Law's class at Wildlight Elementary suited up and performed "text feature surgery" on magazines to find important text features and understand why and how they are used.
Kindness Week
During Kindness Week, students in Mrs. Crowder's class at Yulee Primary School wrote notes to their classmates to tell them something kind.
