Fork Shoals Library Ledger
News for the week of January 22nd
The Book Fair starts on Friday!
Reading is vital to every child’s success, and raising kids as readers means getting involved while they’re young. Now is the time. Since there will never be a substitute for a parent’s direct involvement in his/her child’s education, please make plans to visit our Book Fair. Hope to see you there!
For full information on the upcoming book fair, including the schedule, the online fair, and the All for Books program, visit http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/forkshoalselemsch.
*6% sales tax is added to all Book Fair purchases. We accept cash, checks, and all major credit/debit cards. All checks should be made payable to Fork Shoals School.*
Book of the Week: Wonder Horse by Emily Arnold McCully
Wonder Horse: The True Story of the World's Smartest Horse by Emily Arnold McCully is a nominee for the 2012-13 South Carolina Picture Book Award.
This book is a great story to share with students about showing kindness to animals (and, of course, since it revolves around a horse, students will be lining up to check it out). Wonder Horse is about Doc Key, a former slave, who went on to become a well-respected veterinarian. Unlike so many others during that time, he preached about being kind to animals, and he definitely practiced what he preached.
Jim Key was a very special horse. Doc expected him to be a champion racer, but Jim was born with twisted legs and was not expected to live very long. Jim, however, surprised everyone, including Doc. Jim Key showed Doc that he could learn. Jim learned to spell, do basic arithmetic, and even pick out primary colors. He was at his best when in front of a crowd, which came in handy when Doc and Jim took their show on the road.
Doc and Jim Key showed everyone around them a bit about animal intelligence and kindness. Animals--and even people--can do great things with a little encouragement!
Upcoming Author Visits
On Thursday, February 28th, author and celebrity Holly Durst will be visiting with Kindergarten-2nd grade students. She will be promoting her picture book, Chocolate Socks, as part of our Read Across America celebration. If you would like to pre-order a book, please send a check for $16.19 made payable to Holly Durst to your child's teacher prior to February 28th.
Are you reading the Book Award nominees?
Voting will be held during the week of February 11-15, so Book Award books should be read before that week.
For a list of books in each of the Book Award categories, visit the library blog (Fork Shoals Reads!) or take a look at the videos at the end of this newsletter.
*Note: Ms. Knight will announce the nominees for the 2013-14 Book Awards in March!*

PTA Short Term Clubs
Our PTA is looking for volunteers for our upcoming spring short term clubs that will take place each Wednesday for the month of March from 2:30-3:30. Club leaders are needed for chess, croquet, knitting, and basketball. Someone is also needed to lead a simple woodworking club. Home Depot will provide the materials, but a leader is needed. If you or someone you know could help with any of these clubs, please email forkshoalspta@gmail.com . Thank you for your help in providing these experiences for our students.
