We are once again excited to utilize the online scheduling program, SchoolSoft, to schedule Term 3 Parent-Teacher Conferences at Lake Orion High School. Parents will have the option to choose either a virtual or in-person conference with teachers. Both our in-person and virtual (Microsoft Teams) Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Please see your email later this week from School Messenger for further details; School Soft availability will open Wednesday for scheduling.

The new LOHS Parent Group (formally LOHS PTO) is looking for donations to help feed our staff before Parent Teacher Conferences begin on Thursday, March 2nd. If you are able to donate any soft drinks, waters, baked goods, etc, please consider signing up on our sign-up genius. We are also looking for parents to help set up & tear down the buffet in the staff lounge.

If you would like to make any monetary donations to assist with planning Parent Teacher Conference Dinners, or Staff Appreciation Week in May, please feel free to send your donations to the Main Office, attention LOHS PTO - ROSA EVERITT, or you may donate via Venmo to @LOHS_RosaEveritt with the last four digits 3256.

For the first time since 2019, LOHS will be hosting an in-person College Fair on Monday, March 6th, 2023. Currently 70 public and private colleges and universities, both in and out of state are confirmed attendees and that number will continue to increase. All branches of the military will be represented. Community colleges and trade schools will also be present to share local opportunities.

Mandatory Senior Meetings will be held on Tuesday, March 7th or Thursday, March 9th at 7PM.

This meeting will include information about Graduation, cap and gown distribution, 4th term exam exemption, and Senior celebrations.

On March 17th at 7pm, the North Oakland Community Coalition (NOCC) invites you to spend an evening with professional mental health presenter and Lake Orion graduate, Anthony Grupido. Anthony combines magic and his personal experience with anxiety and depression to make the stigma surrounding mental health disappear. This event is recommended for audiences 13 and up.

The presentation will begin at 7pm on March 17th, and take place at the Lake Orion High School Performing Arts Center. Doors open at 6:30pm.

As part of our Diversified Curriculum, our LOHS Spanish students will have the opportunity to travel to Puerto Rico over Spring Break 2024 to learn more about the Puerto Rican culture and to speak Spanish! We will take a walking tour of San Juan, visit the Yunque Caribbean National Forest and the Botanical Gardens, go ziplining, do a bioluminescent bay excursion, and snorkel! What is DEEP?

The DEEP initiative allows motivated students to earn college credit by taking accredited courses taught by UM-Flint faculty. DEEP will do exactly what its name implies: deepen the students' knowledge and understanding of course material, while providing in-depth college courses that will prepare them for college and university academic expectations.

When does it run?

• DEEP courses are taught on a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule each week. DEEP courses are taught during the regular high school academic day, providing students with time to participate in additional classes and after-school activities. DEEP courses generally follow the UM-Flint academic calendar. However, UM-Flint faculty will accommodate each high school's Spring Break.
• Students will meet weekly at LOHS for Seminar.

Partnerships

• Not only will Lake Orion High School for an educational partnership with U of M, but with Clarkston High School. Students will leave LOHS after 2nd hour to attend 3rd and 4th hours at CHS.

Over 50 Spanish students participated in Oakland School's first Seal of Biliteracy Boot Camp in March 2019. Boot Camp offers students an opportunity to participate in a “linguistic obstacle course” that includes real-world tasks to evaluate their language proficiency in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students get real time feedback on their language performance, have the opportunity to connect with other language learners, and build their confidence to test for the Seal of Biliteracy. Use this link if you would like to purchase a Class of 2023 Senior Yard Sign. The yard signs will ship to LOHS and be delivered to your Seniors at the Senior Breakfast on May 17th. Last date to purchase yard signs will be April 7th.

Senior Families please plan on attending one of the two parent graduation meetings that will be held on March 7th and March 9th at 7pm in the LOHS Auditorium.

The Michigan Achievement Scholarship is a new state financial aid scholarship beginning with 2023 graduates. Scholarships are applicable for training programs, community colleges, private or public colleges and universities. High school students and parents interested in learning more are encouraged to register for an informational webinar provided by the Michigan Department of Treasury’s MI Student Aid team.

Students who graduate from high school in Michigan with a diploma or certificate of completion or achieved a high school equivalency certificate in 2023 or after will be eligible for more financial aid from the State of Michigan:

• Up to $2,000 if they attend an eligible training provider in Michigan, per year, up to two years
• Up to $2,750 if they attend a Michigan community college, per year, up to three years
• Up to $4,000 if they attend a Michigan private college or university, per year, up to five years
• Up to $5,500 if they attend a Michigan public university, per year, up to five years

Local Scholarships for 2023 Seniors are becoming active on the Counseling Office website located at Scholarship Applications (2022-23 School Year) - Lake Orion Community Schools (lakeorionschools.org). As each link becomes active, it is both green and bold. Please also see eligibility, scholarship amount and all criteria as well as due dates when applying.

We have started utilizing School Dismissal Manager (SDM), a program for parents to communicate early student departures. LOHS successfully used the SDM program last year. It is accessible on either computer or smartphone, allowing parents the opportunity to officially submit an early dismissal request without calling the school.

On approximately September 22, you should have received a communication from School Dismissal Manager with additional details. Parents are encouraged to check their designated email accounts. Also, be advised the message might be redirected to your “junk” folders. The welcome email from SDM provides all relevant information necessary to activate and begin using your account.

Just a reminder that Sendmoneytoschool.com has been replaced by lakeorion.familyportal.cloud. Please visit the site to set up a lunch account for your student. There is a tutorial at the bottom of the Family Portal page that walks you through the process of setting up an account. Information on meal prices for the 2022-2023 school year are listed below:
